Editor, The Beacon:
It seems the movement to undermine schools — especially public schools — is spreading out to other areas. I saw a New York Times article about 15-year-old kids doing roofing jobs. Two proposals before the Florida Legislature would legitimize it. Somehow the targets seem to be poor kids or disadvantaged kids.
Behind the child-labor laws were awful conditions that were dangerous and exploitative, disgraceful for a civilized country.
What are these people trying to do? Their talking points are the same as those of the mill owners who hired 10-year-olds.
At best, changing the laws as proposed would keep kids from having a meaningful education … or a full childhood.
