Class Notes: ESE Family Event set for Feb. 3 at University High School

Volusia County Schools will be presenting an ESE Family Event for families of students with special needs 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, at University High School, 1000 W. Rhode Island Ave. in Orange City. This event will have presenters, a resource fair, community connections and prizes.

Some of the items that will be available include accessible reading materials, accommodations for students with disabilities, technology to assist the students, information about autism spectrum disorder, career and technical education, college disability services, diploma and deferment options, information about dyslexia, financial planning for special needs, guardianship, individual education plans, Project SEARCH, supportive employment and vocational rehabilitation.

The National Teens Overcoming Pressure Summit 2024 will be taking place in DeLand on Saturday, Feb. 24, at Greater Union First Baptist Church, 240 S. Clara Ave. The event is for teens ages 13-18, and is sponsored by the Volusia County Chapter of National Hook-Up of Black Women Inc.

Some of the local guest speakers will be Terri Bailey, mental-health school counselor in Volusia County; LaShakia Moore, superintendent of schools in Flagler County; Tanya E. Smith, mental-health school counselor in Volusia County; Volusia County Sheriff Michael Chitwood; and Mainland High School student MacKenzie Christine Robinson. These speakers will cover “Teen Domestic Violence,” “Drugs & Vaping,” “Your Mental Health,” “Human Trafficking” and “Teen Entrepreneurship.” There will also be workshops, lunch, T-shirts and 10 chromebook awards.

The program aims to teach teenagers how to identify healthy versus unhealthy relationships, in addition to early-warning signs of abuse, violence markers, and controlling and manipulative behavior. The goal is to reduce the incidence of teen-dating violence and promote healthy relationships by guiding our youth through positive self-image, effective mannerisms, positive behaviors and self-motivation.

The event will run 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Feb. 24 in the Education Building of Greater Union First Baptist Church, 240 S. Clara Ave. in DeLand.

National Hook-Up of Black Women Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of women and their families through support of the arts, education, health and wellness and human-service programs. FPL is offering up to 10 graduating seniors a scholarship of up to $20,000 to empower future STEM leaders. Applications are now open for the NextEra Energy Scholarship for Students in SECME (Science, Engineering, Communications, Mathematics, Enrichment), which supports high-school seniors pursuing STEM education and career paths.

Qualified applicants must have at least one year of experience in a SECME program in one of the following counties: Brevard, Broward, Escambia, Flagler, Hendry, Manatee, Miami Dade, Palm Beach, Seminole or Volusia. Starke Elementary School

The Volusia County School Board has officially appointed Jessica Aivazis as the interim principal of Starke Elementary School in DeLand.

DeLand High School Athletics

The DeLand High School girls weightlifting team picked up two team seconds at University High. Those gaining firsts were Mattie Washington (2), Addison Ruocco (2), Katyah Ross (2) and Nazaria Milfort, while seconds were earned by Elena Cruz (2), Milfort, Ashleigh Mina and Sierra West. Thirds were gained by Katherin Rodriguez (2), Mia Camacho, Mina, Paige Underwood, Abby Schrier, Bayleigh Couch and Cayce Hughes.

The DeLand High competitive cheer team hosted a tournament in the Bulldog gym recently, called the Nix Thomas Memorial HHQ (Hungry, Humble, Quiet) Competition. Thomas was a DHS coach who passed away. The DeLand Varsity Coed Game Day squad and the Varsity Medium Coed Traditional Teams took first-place finishes.

The DeLand boys soccer team lost to New Smyrna Beach, 3-0, but picked up a 2-0 win in the first round of the Five Star Conference Tournament.

The Lady Bulldog basketball team won one and lost a narrow one. The team defeated Forest Lake Academy, 63-14, and lost to Sanford Seminole, 44-41.

The Bulldog team defeated University, 61-53, with Beegie Gordon and Robert Davis each making 9 points.

The DeLand girls soccer team lost to Lake Howell, 7-0, and then, in the first round of the Five Star Tournament, lost to New Smyrna Beach, 8-0.

The upcoming sports calendar for DHS has the boys basketball team at West Port at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, while the wrestlers host varsity duals in the Bulldog gym with Mainland and University at 6 p.m.

On Thursday, Feb. 1, the girls basketball team competes at Seabreeze at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

On Friday, Feb. 2, the competitive cheer team is at the FHSAA State Championship in Lakeland, the Bulldog basketball team plays at Merritt Island at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and the Lady Bulldog basketball team plays at New Smyrna Beach at 6 p.m.

Stetson University Athletics

The Stetson University Hatter basketball team lost to Kennesaw State, 88- 70, with Jalen Blackmon scoring 27 points, with one blocked shot. Josh Smith added 10 points with six rebounds.

The team bounced right back with a 84-66 win over Queens, with Blackmon getting 19 points. Stephan Swenson added 16 points with seven rebounds and five assists. Treyton Thompson also made 16 points, along with seven rebounds and four blocked shots. Smith scored 10 points, with 10 rebounds and four assists.

The Lady Hatters basketball team lost to Florida Gulf Coast, 66-51, with Jamiya Turner scoring 14 points.

On Wednesday, Jan. 31, the women basketball players travel to Eastern Kentucky, and on Thursday, Feb. 1, the men play at North Alabama at 8:45 p.m. On Saturday, Feb. 3, the women are home against Bellarmine at 2 p.m., with the men playing at Central Arkansas at 4:30 p.m.

The Stetson women’s tennis team on Saturday, Jan. 27, goes to FAU, and returns home Friday, Feb. 2, to face Wofford at 10 a.m. The men’s squad goes to Mercer on Saturday, Jan. 27; to Georgia State on Sunday, Jan. 28; and to USF Friday, Feb. 2.

College honors

Timothy Montes, of Deltona, who is majoring in mechanical engineering at the University of Central Florida, has recently been awarded a scholarship from Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs®, the foundation of the Fabricators and Manufacturers Association, for the spring 2024 semester.

Katherinne Rodriguez, of DeLand, has been named to the President’s List for the fall 2023 semester at Plymouth State University in Plymouth, New Hampshire. Rodriguez is a psychology major.

Baylee J. Eads, of Orange City, has been named to the dean’s list at Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama.

Christian Bernabe, of Deltona, has been named to the dean’s list and the Chancellor’s List for the fall 2023 semester at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

Lorelei Wilson, of Deltona, and Lauren Jacobs, of DeLand, have been named to the dean’s list for the fall 2023 semester at Valdosta State University in Valdosta, Georgia.

Sai Vallabhaneni, of DeLand, earned a Master of Science in Engineering Management at Trine University in Angola, Indiana, at the end of the spring 2023 semester.
