HELPING THE HOMELESS — Joe and Misty Somerville of Share the Burden Ministry, and volunteers Lyman Wescott and Lynette Drayton, stand in front of a truck loaded with items to be given to the homeless Jan. 24 at the West Volusia Dream Center in Orange City. The words “PIT COUNT” on the T-shirts they are wearing refer to an event where volunteers count the number of homeless people in a certain area in 24 hours. The numbers are reported to the Department of Housing and Urban Development for local funding. This team will lead the Pit Count for Deltona, DeBary and Orange City. BEACON PHOTO/MARSHA MCLAUGHLIN

First Christian invites those without a church home to attend worship at 10:45 a.m. Sundays, with Pastor Carlos Perez lifting up prayers and giving the sermon, Brenda Velázquez-Morales directing the Communion, and Andrew Glesson and Donna Mozley providing the music.

The Outreach Committee will host the Tuesday, Feb. 6, meal at The Bridge from 5 to 6 p.m. AdventHealth-Fish assists with the meal. The Bridge is at 421 S. Palmetto Ave. in DeLand.

‘The A Team’

This Sunday, Feb. 4, Pastor Mark Bitner will deliver the sermon “The A Team” at First Church DeLand.

Did you know that God will meet you where you are? To know God, one doesn’t have to rise up before Jesus will help. He will come to you no matter where you are in your life. He will speak your language, understand your thoughts and not judge. When you open your heart to Jesus, He will shoulder your pain and bring comfort to you. God is waiting for you to make the first move.

Bible study is at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, in the Life Enrichment Center. Pastor Mark will lead participants in an Apologetic study, and you are invited.

“Best Marriage Ever” is a free event open to the public. This is an opportunity to enrich your marriage and enhance your relationship with your spouse. The times and dates are: 6-9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16, with a meal provided; 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, with a meal provided; and 4-6 p.m. Sunday, March 17. For more information and to register, go to: www.bestmarriageever.org.

“Life on Purpose” is the theme for the Young Adults Ministries. These young people work to find God’s purpose in their life as they go through the transitional stages of life, such as post-high school or college, early career or marriage. Sunday Bible Study is at 7 p.m. in Building 6, where dinner is provided.

‘Love Surrounds Us’

The congregation of Mosaic Unitarian Universalist meets online at 11 a.m. every Sunday. The Feb. 4 service is titled “Love Surrounds Us.”

In this month of love, the Rev. Dr. Tracie Barrett discusses how love surrounds us and centers us in the work we’re called to do in this world as Unitarian Universalists.

Jane Bradford will be the service leader. Everyone is welcome!

Defining the economy

Toni Hunt will present “The Eco-No’s-Me” at the 10:30 a.m. service Sunday, Feb. 4, at First Unitarian Universalist Church of West Volusia in DeLand. Hunt is an economist, researcher and data analyst.

The presentation will focus on the U.S. economy’s exclusion of African Americans. Its adverse effects can be understood through interconnected factors rooted in historical discrimination, disparities and/or implicit and explicit biases in education, employment, wealth, food, housing, and access to critical resources. These exclusions contribute to generational income inequality, limited opportunities, and persistent economic disadvantages perpetuating a cycle difficult to break away from without targeted policies, systemic changes, and equitable affirmative action.

Unitarian Universalists are an inclusive, freethinking, faith community, where all are welcome as everyone learns and searches together for truth.

Spiritual shape-shifters

At its 8 a.m., 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday services, Feb. 4, First Presbyterian Church of DeLand will explore becoming “Spiritual Shape-shifters,” under the leadership of Associate Pastor Cassandra Riker.

On-site, livestreamed and recorded on fpcdeland.org, Facebook and YouTube, listeners will hear a reading of 1 Corinthians 9:16-23, in which Paul declares, “I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means, I might save some.”

The Bible relates that many people God has called to share the Word exemplify rather unusual but good choices: a hustler, a Jewish woman, a tax collector, even Paul himself, a persecutor of Christians. These odd choices make great news for us with unique gifts, for we know our world burgeons with many different people from many different backgrounds. Can each of us become a “good pick”?

Pastor Casey dives into this sometimes uncomfortable challenge to become spiritual shape-shifters to meet people “where they are at”! While the Gospel message remains the same, our approach must become as unique as the individuals to whom we are ministering.

In its vision to reach up, in and out, First Pres engages in many missions beyond weekly worship. For example, this week offers Sunday schools; Bible-related studies; meals for the homeless and needy at The Bridge today, Thursday, Feb. 1; Friday Free Bingo in the fellowship hall Feb. 2; the Bell and Chancel Choirs and Praise Band will rehearse music; and diverse people will enthusiastically meet to refine their fitness in Balance Class.

Next Saturday, Feb. 10, the twice-monthly God’s Bathhouse will remain open in the courtyard from 9 a.m. until about 11 a.m. Here, needy and homeless people can enjoy private hot showers, manna bags, fresh clothing and towels, and fellowship.

Liturgically, the church is looking ahead to the Lenten season to prepare us spiritually for the Easter season. Beginning Lent Wednesday, Feb. 14, First Presbyterian’s congregation will worship with Bethel AME Church members at 226 E. Howry Ave. in DeLand. This Ash Wednesday service will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Bethel sanctuary.
