Another Deltona commissioner quits
BEACON PHOTO/AL EVERSON<br> ANOTHER ELECTED OFFICIAL EXITS — Without giving a reason, Deltona City Commissioner Tom Burbank, center, is leaving well before his term expires. Shown here flanked by Mayor Santiago Avila and Vice Mayor Jody Lee Storozuk, Burbank has resigned, effective Feb. 1. He was elected to represent District 1 in 2022. District 1 covers the northeast portion of Deltona. The City Commission must appoint someone from that political zone to serve as an interim replacement. The deadline for eligible District 1 voters to apply for the appointment is Feb 19. The commission will name Burbank’s successor no later than March 1.

The day after the Deltona City Commission named a replacement for a member who resigned because of health reasons, there is now another abrupt vacancy on the elected governing body.

District 1 Commissioner Tom Burbank has tendered his resignation, effective Feb. 1, 2024. Burbank gave no reason for leaving the office to which he was elected in 2022. His term expires in 2026.

Deltona’s charter requires the vacancy to be filled within 30 days, thus setting the deadline for March 1. The commission must now solicit qualified voters who are interested in being appointed to represent District 1. That district covers the northeast portion of Deltona.

Whether the seat is filled by appointment or not, the seat will be up for grabs in the upcoming 2024 election.

Anyone living in District 1 who meets the qualifications to hold the office may contact the City Clerk’s Office at Deltona City Hall, 2345 Providence Blvd., or e-mail jraftery@deltonafl.gov. The deadline for applying is noon Monday, Feb. 19.

The City Commission convened in a special session Jan. 29 and named Troy Shimkus to fill the vacancy of former Commissioner Anita Bradford. Shimkus was the favorite in the balloting by the commission. On the motion to appoint Shimkus to the empty spot, the vote was 5-1, with Burbank dissenting.
