This February at Shoestring Theatre in Lake Helen, love is definitely in the air as Brianna Gutierrez, Daniel Feldman, Sally Daykin, Adam Guevara, Don Liska and David Finkle transport us to the early 1960s in Neil Simon’s classic comedy Barefoot in the Park.

Directed by Andrea Finkle and stage-managed by Nancy Ballesteros, Barefoot in the Park is a hilarious look at what it means to be newlyweds and what it means to be beyond that phase of your life.

Brianna Gutierrez, last seen in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, sparkles as Corie Bratter, who is in love with her new husband, her new apartment, and her new role as a young wife.

Daniel Feldman, a newcomer to Shoestring, as Paul Bratter, provides a balancing force to his flighty new wife. He is a young lawyer with his first case in court and no idea how the love of his life can be so excited about their five-floor walk-up apartment in Manhattan.

Sally Daykin, a longtime veteran of Shoestring, shines as Corie’s mother, who loves her daughter dearly but isn’t quite sure how her son-in-law is going to stay smitten.

Adam Guevara, another Shoestring first-timer, brings an insouciant verve to the role of Victor Velasco, the adventurer who lives in the attic of the walk-up and who, Corie hopes, will bring some love into her lonely mother’s life.

Shoestring veterans Don Liska and David Finkle round out the cast as the Telephone Man and the Lord and Taylor deliveryman, respectively.

A play in three acts, Barefoot in the Park offers an evening of laughs and relatability. It was Neil Simon’s second Broadway show, and Mike Nichols’ directing debut. The original production featured Elizabeth Ashley as Corie and Robert Redford as Paul. A 1967 movie version had Robert Redford reprise his role for the screen opposite Jane Fonda as Corie.

This is a feel-good show that will have you laughing throughout.
