My Muzungu eyes are improving

Join Liz James at the 10:30 a.m. service Sunday, March 3, at First Unitarian Universalist Church of West Volusia in DeLand, as she, with humility and humor, recounts her experience as part of a well-building project to benefit a Maasai village, and how her “Muzungu” (white people) eyes are opened.

This story has it all: humor, over-analysis, and confrontations with lions.

Liz James is the founder of a 200,000-person online UU community called the Unitarian Universalist Hysterical Society. She is the host of the Cracked Cup podcast, and is working on a book with Skinner House Press.

James is based out of Saskatchewan, Canada, where she is building a tiny house with her own two hands.

Unitarian Universalists are an inclusive, freethinking, faith community, where all are welcome, as everyone learns and searches together for truth.

‘Gideon as the Underdog’

“God and the Underdogs” is the current sermon series at First Church DeLand. This Sunday, March 3, Pastor Mark Bitner’s sermon title is “Gideon as the Underdog.”

Gideon felt unworthy to accomplish the task of rescuing Israel, as the Lord asked him to do. Due to his lack of confidence, he requested proof from the Lord that He would do as promised.

How many of us have been called, yet felt unqualified to complete the task at hand? We must remember that God is with us through all circumstances, giving support and love.

A concert featuring New Ground takes place 7-9 p.m. Friday, March 8, in the sanctuary. The group performs Southern gospel music. A love offering will be collected.

The annual Rummage Sale will be 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, March 9, in the Life Enrichment Center. Proceeds will benefit the Overflow Youth Group. This is always a well-attended event, and the public is welcome.

Save the date for Vacation Bible School, which will run Monday, June 24, through Friday, June 28. The theme is “Scuba Diving Into Friendship With God.” Volunteer registration is open on the website at www.firstchurchdeland.org.

A Bible study takes place at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 6. Pastor Mark will lead one study, and a small group will meet in Room 113.

Principles and purposes

The congregation of Mosaic Unitarian Universalist meets online at 11 a.m. every Sunday.

On March 3, join the Rev. Dr. Tracie Barrett for a discussion of proposed revisions to Unitarian Universalists’ principles and purposes (Article 2 of the Bylaws), upon which congregations will vote during UU’s General Assembly. Everyone is welcome!

Blessing

At First Presbyterian Church of DeLand, on Sunday, March 3, Pastor Michael Bodger will ask his listeners, “What does blessing actually mean?” In today’s world, we hear this word commonly used and all too often considered a byword, an embodiment of something unspecified but outstanding or beneficial.

In the church’s three services and by livestreaming/ recording, Pastor Bodger will read Psalm 63 to reveal the depth of meaning of this word, often lost to our times and thinking. King David’s song to God clearly alludes to a much earlier and original definition of blessing [to seek or recognize favor, mercy, benefit by kneeling, bending; by sacrificing blood on an altar] used by ancient Hebrew, Germanic and Latin peoples.

By exploring the origins of blessing, Pastor Bodger will charge his audience to personally explore this word’s primal meaning, to both speaker and recipient. Do we carefully and clearly think about just what blessing we are bestowing when we offer this in today’s world?

On Friday, March 1, First Pres invites all people to the fun and fellowship of its monthly free bingo night in the fellowship hall at 7:30 p.m. In friendly competition for silly and simple prizes, participants can practice bingo skills and enjoy refreshing snacks and drinks.

More importantly, a free Food Distribution event begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 2, in the area of the newly designed parking lot and pavilion. The drive-thru begins on West Pennsylvania Avenue and continues to the loading of boxes (feeding four for a week) into cars. First Pres invites any friends who need supplementary food to join in until supplies run out.

The church at-large is reading Pause by Elizabeth Caldwell. Along with individual and personal reading and interacting with a psalm a week, Pastor Bodger’s sermons will follow the author’s lead through spiritual consideration and pause for Lenten growth, thus enriching the journey from Ash Wednesday to Holy Week and the Resurrection.

Save the date for the annual Eggsperience Saturday, March 23, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. There will be many varied and age-appropriate activities on the First Pres campus, including bouncing sites, arts and crafts, and egg hunts for the very young and older.

Come become part of the congregation at First Pres to experience Lent together!
