Charles Eady, a contemporary artist and author, uses art to examine long-held beliefs about the South. His paintings open dialogues into little-known facts about Southern history. His emphasis for the past decade has been on the lives of those living in the South before the Civil War. He has a unique artistic language for layering art into history.

Born in South Carolina, Eady lives in Ocala. He graduated from Claflin University with a Bachelor of Arts in art education.

Eady won the 2021 ArtFields Grand Prize with a portrait of a girl who wanted to read. His art has been exhibited nationally and internationally. His pioneering approach to mixed-media incorporates documents into his paintings.

In 2023, Eady had his first solo exhibit at a national museum, the Appleton Museum of Art in Ocala. A recent painting of his is a part of their permanent collection.

Eady’s central theme within his work includes scenes from the everyday life of free Blacks. He endeavors through his work to teach history and improve social conflict. The incredibly powerful pieces disrupt mainstream imagery and give voice to a population silenced from history.

His exhibition “The Unscene South” runs March 9-April 13 at the African American Museum of the Arts, 325 S. Clara Ave. in DeLand. The opening reception will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 9, and will include an exhibition talk by Charles Eady. The event is open to the public. Admission is free, and refreshments will be served.

The museum is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesdays-Fridays, and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays. Admission is free.
