Beach volleyball officially started as a sport at DeLand high school this year but was always a club.

Beach volleyball and regular volleyball have their differences. For example, beach volleyball requires more conditioning and stamina to deal with the difficulties of the hot sun and sand. As well as counting your conditioning after season to keep working the legs and Beach volleyball only requires two people on the court for beach volleyball while regular volleyball requires six. Their courts are not the same, beach volleyball has a smaller court than regular volleyball.

While beach volleyball does requires a lot of conditioning and having to deal with the heat inside, volleyball is more technical and more skilled. Inside volleyball has a faster pace and reaction time to the game. It can be more intense on the court for the fans and coaches depending on how the game is to the type of environment. Captain Deanna Disinger, senior, has played indoors for 10 years and beach for 2 years and will be attending The University of Lynchburg for beach volleyball because of the relaxed vibe of beach volleyball.

As a player and a student, it does require a lot of time including preseason and regular season. For playing beach volleyball at DeLand High there is preseason and practice five days a week from 4 p.m. to sundown. During the season they practice three days a week plus game days, which can go for hours. Even after season players dedicate their time to working out to keep in shape.

Some players do play both sports, but beach volleyball has a relaxed atmosphere compared to indoor volleyball which has a more competitive vide. Even though beach volleyball makes a volleyball just became a sport at high school it was a club before and has taken a few years to grow. But since there are courts at the high school it’s been easier to recruit players.
