Nastiness often undermines one’s point

Nastiness often undermines one’s point

I was initially tickled to see that one of my commentary nemeses in The Beacon actually reads what I write, but then it just made me sad.

He didn’t say much at all except that he is happy when liberals are sad and that he and his like-minded associates don’t “give a damn” what we think. He suggested we leave Florida or, even better, the U.S. entirely.

Then he insulted the president and the vice president, said Trump was going to win again, and that he “revels” in our “agony.”

Can anyone not see that that kind of thinking, from Trump on down to the lowest of the MAGA faithful, is destructive and bizarre?

I don’t want my fellow Americans to be in agony just because they vote conservative. I don’t want my country to fail when a Republican is president, even if that means we are going to elect a Democrat.

That’s the problem with the MAGA movement. It’s all a game to them.

Only one side can “win”, and winning is all that matters. I do care what Republicans think, even if that courtesy is not reciprocated, because looking for solutions to the problems we all face is more important than winning or making someone else look bad.

Two immediate and important examples: funding for Ukraine, and the bipartisan border bill to overhaul our immigration system. Large majorities of the American people, across the political spectrum, believe in helping Ukraine and NATO stand against Russian aggression.

Large majorities are in favor of streamlining our immigration policies, increasing funding for border security, tightening asylum rules, and helping states deal with immigration. Both of these priorities are being blocked in Congress for no reason other than to make the other “side” look bad politically.

This is self-destructive, juvenile nonsense and should cease immediately.

Pass things that make our country better, and then take credit for it.

Don’t make things actively worse and then try to ride the blame game into re-election. Just do the right thing, and I’ll promise to say I’m in agony and get you a trophy that says “Owned the Libs Hard!” Deal?
