DeLand police officers arrested a Jacksonville man and charged him with felony cruelty to animals after a dog was found badly beaten Saturday.

Officers were dispatched to a home on North Marydell Avenue in reference to an animal complaint call. The reporting party told officers they observed a dog, tied to a tree, being hit with sticks for scratching a vehicle.

Officers found the dog, Stella, a 5-year-old female Tan Chow Mix, with a strap tied in a knot around her neck excessively tight. Stella was bleeding from her nose, eye and mouth.

Officers recognized the dog from previous interactions and noted she was not known to be aggressive. Stella appeared scared when officers approached her. She was sitting in a defensive/protective posture and was wheezing from her muzzle.

It was noted there was a significant amount of blood in the driveway, and the dog was beaten so badly it defecated. There was blood on a rock and beer bottle near where the dog was laying.

During the investigation, officers spoke with Naaman P. McGregor (03/19/1987) who said he kicked the dog to protect himself from being attacked.

The dog’s owner arrived at the scene and took Stella to the vet for an evaluation and treatment of its injuries.

McGregor was arrested and charged with felony cruelty to animals. He was booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail and has since bonded out.
