All 14 branches of the Volusia County Public Library will be closed June 8 and 9 as they migrate to a new online catalog and circulation system.
Libraries have come a long way since the old card catalogue system of previous centuries, noted Library Services Director Lucinda Colee, explaining that the new catalog, TLC Carl Connect Discovery, will improve patrons’ experience and save taxpayer dollars.
“TLC will find, identify, select, and obtain materials that have the same title and author and will provide one result record with buttons to select your favorite format,” she said. “Rather than having to scroll through multiple pages of records for a particular James Patterson title, you will receive one record with all the format types. You can select the button for the format you want, and it will take you directly to information on its availability.”
Library card holders will be able to create wish lists for future checkouts. They will be able to turn on or off their borrowing history. Those who reserve items will be able to pause their reservations if they are going out of town or want to delay the reservation. We will also be able to offer online borrower registration.
One big change patrons will notice will be their PIN codes. On June 10, each patron’s PIN code will be set to their birthdate in the MMDDYY format. They can use the new passcode or change it to a new code with any six digits. They can also create a login name so they don’t need their library card to log in to place reservations.
During the two-day closure, patrons may return items using the outside book return at each branch.
