The Volusia County Marine Science Center in Ponce Inlet released three juvenile sea turtles back into their ocean home May 23.
The three green turtles — one short of a full group of Ninja Turtles — were dubbed Manchego, Nettle and Swiss. Manchego was found in Daytona Beach, Nettle in Ponce Inlet, and Swiss in New Smyrna Beach, between early March and early April.
“Manchego and Nettle were suffering from pneumonia when they stranded in Volusia County waters in March, while Swiss was found in New Smyrna Beach on April 4 with a missing left front flipper due to predation,” a press release from the center reads. “Following rehabilitation and treatment with fluids, antibiotics and vitamins, the turtles have been approved for release by Marine Science Center veterinarian Brooke Burkhalter, who noted that Swiss can swim well with a missing flipper.”
The release was held on the nondriving section of the Beach Street ramp in Ponce Inlet. Locals gathered in flocks to witness the release. Luckily for the trio of turtles, the weather and ocean conditions were just right, and they were able to be released back into the ocean without issue.
