SAVING THE STAINED GLASS — Stained-glass expert Bob Froyen begins work May 20 to restore the Ascension window behind the pulpit at First Church DeLand. Many of the historic stained-glass windows of the church, which was built in 1883 with extensions in 1920 and 1927, are in urgent need of repairs, with some windows showing signs of sagging and bulging. The Ascension window and many others in the church were created by noted stained-glass artist Joseph V. Llorens Sr. and added during the church’s expansions in the 1920s.

Morning Glory

Start your day out right with coffee and Jesus at 8:30 a.m. Sundays during Morning Glory, a casual worship service at Glenwood Presbyterian Church. The service includes music, meditation and an inspirational message from Pastor the Rev. Larry Cuthill. Child care is available.

The first Sunday of the month is a combined service with Communion at 11 a.m.

In between, there are Sunday school 9:45-10:45 a.m. and snacks and fellowship 10:30-11 a.m.

Glenwood Presbyterian Church is a friendly and inclusive church,

dedicated to spreading the Gospel and serving our community.

We’re all in this together!

This Sunday, June 9, at First Presbyterian Church of DeLand, Associate Pastor Cassandra Riker will present in her sermon the monumental idea that “We’re All in This Together!”

This lesson reflects Scripture in Genesis informing us of God’s loving understanding when he created Adam. Finding the first man lonely, God made Eve, because people, who are social creatures, would prosper in this world only while living in communion with one another.

Although together we remain happier, problems can arise within groups; however, faith and practice call Christians to stand together as one body with the power of the Holy Spirit.

Free family fun bingo will continue 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, June 7, (first Fridays over the summer) with appropriate and silly prizes and refreshments.

God’s Bathhouse opens at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 8, in the courtyard. Volunteers will assist all comers with a private shower, fresh towels and clothing, manna bags, and friendly interaction until 11 a.m.

“A Focus on Spiritual Practices” begins 5:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, and continues for six Wednesdays. Senior Pastor Michael Bodger will lead the opening session, “An Introduction to Spiritual Practices.” With various church members as leaders, sessions will continue to focus on solitude and the enriching spiritual growth of these practices. Admission is free. Register with the church office.

Register your entering kindergartners and rising fifth-graders for the annual Vacation Bible School July 21-26. Children will participate in art, music, Scripture and dance daily. See the church website for a confirmed place for children.

While much of the First Presbyterian’s schedule slows down during summer, many regular Bible studies and group meetings continue.

‘Asleep Below Deck’

A new sermon series, “Rowing the Boat,” is starting at First Church DeLand. As a child, did you ever try to run from your parents and hide, only to discover they would always find you? No matter how many times you tried, they always succeeded. That’s the situation Jonah found himself in, running from the Lord, surely to be found hiding below deck.

This Sunday, June 9, Pastor Mark Bitner will address Jonah’s predicament that almost killed him and others, in the sermon “Asleep Below Deck.”

Endings

This Sunday, June 9, the congregation of Mosaic Unitarian Universalist will continue the Summer Sharing Series of roundtable-style services. These services are designed to allow participants to share their thoughts if they choose to do so. Sharing is always voluntary; active listening is welcome, too. Facilitator Teresa Leary will guide everyone through the discussion, with the focus on “Endings.”

Here are some questions to ponder before the gathering: What is ending in your life now, and how might you hold it with love and compassion? When was the last time you took a leap of faith?

All are welcome.

Justice

All are invited to the Unitarian Universalists of DeLand’s 10:30 a.m. service Sunday, June 9, for an in-depth examination of what social justice means in our individual lives, our congregation and our larger community. The Social Justice team will participate in this worship service through music, poetry, and a hands-on experience of envisioning the future.

Patti Rausch, chair of the Social Justice team and a marriage and family counselor in DeLand, will be the service leader.

The Social Justice team is made up of several congregants who share the view that all people deserve equal economic, political and social rights and opportunities.

Unitarian Universalists are an inclusive, freethinking, faith community, where all are welcome, as everyone learns and searches together for truth.

1st Christian Church activities

The Rev. Carlos Perez continues his sermon series on the New Testament Book of James at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of DeLand. He will address the differences between faith and works leading to salvation. The reality is if you have faith, works will naturally be a product of that faith.

Upcoming activities include the Disciple Men, who meet at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 8, at the Big Rig 2 in DeLand. The leaders of the Disciple Men are Paul Ashton and David Cortes. Call Lee Gartside at 386-734-6078 to reserve a seat.

One of the major ministries of the summer is the BreakSpot Summer Food Program for children. Breakfast is served 8:15-9 a.m. and lunch is served noon-1 p.m. in the fellowship hall.
