Prepare for a nostalgic journey through rock history, as the Athens Theatre in DeLand presents a tribute to two iconic bands: Boston and Styx! Save the date for Saturday, June 8, at 7:30 p.m., when Smokin’ Renegade will grace the stage, delivering powerful performances in honor of these rock legends.

Boston, formed in 1976 by musician and songwriter Tom Scholz, left an indelible mark on the late 1970s and early 1980s rock music scene. Their self-titled debut album, released the same year, captivated audiences with unique melodies and intricate guitar harmonies. Tracks like “More Than a Feeling” and “Peace of Mind” became anthems of a generation. Scholz’s innovative sound, combined with the band’s multilayered guitar work, ensured the album became one of the bestselling debuts of all time. Later hits like “Don’t Look Back” and “Amanda” further solidified their status.

Scholz, an MIT graduate and former Polaroid employee, brought his engineering expertise to the band’s music, developing various Rockman amps and pedals. His meticulous approach resulted in a polished and layered sound that set Boston apart from their peers. The band’s ability to craft anthemic, radio-friendly songs with impressive hooks and soaring guitar solos resonated with a wide audience, appealing to both rock enthusiasts and mainstream listeners.

Smokin’, a tribute band dedicated to Boston, faithfully brings the band’s iconic sound to life. From the soaring guitar solos to the powerful vocals, Smokin’ delivers a musical experience full of Boston’s complex arrangements and lush harmonies, transporting you back to the peak of classic rock’s glory days.

Joining Smokin’ on stage is Renegade, a tribute to Styx. Formed in Chicago in 1972, Styx rose to prominence with a creative blend of rock and pop. Led by the distinctive vocals of Dennis DeYoung and Tommy Shaw’s masterful guitar work, Styx produced hit after hit, drawing audiences with their catchy melodies and smooth lyrics. Songs like “Come Sail Away” and “Fooling Yourself” became instant classics, showcasing their versatility and creativity.

Styx drew inspiration from various genres, quickly gaining attention for their unique sound and songwriting prowess. Their ability to craft complex, multilayered songs that blended catchy tunes and thought-provoking lyrics led to subsequent albums, including Pieces of Eight and Cornerstone, featuring memorable tracks like “Renegade,” “Blue Collar Man” and “Babe.” Kilroy Was Here, released in 1983, followed as another ambitious concept album, featuring the 1980s dance hit single “Mr. Roboto.”

Renegade channels Styx’s distinct harmonies and intricate instrumentation, bringing the essence of Styx to life. With their faithful renditions of Styx’s hits, they pay tribute to the band’s enduring legacy.

Don’t miss this night of rock ’n’ roll nostalgia! It’s a rock history journey you won’t want to miss!
