Get ready to be enchanted by the timeless tale that has captivated hearts for centuries! Beauty and the Beast has evolved from a literary classic into a beloved Disney movie and a celebrated Broadway musical, showcasing its enduring appeal and universal themes of love, sacrifice and redemption.

Now, the Athens Theatre in DeLand proudly presents the musical, which runs from Friday, July 12, through Sunday, Aug. 4, as the kickoff to their spectacular 2024-25 season. This show is rated G.

The story of Beauty and the Beast traces its origins back to 1740, when French novelist Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve first penned La Belle et la Bête. Written for an adult audience, Villeneuve’s intricate tale explored themes of familial duty and the transformative power of love.

In 1756, Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont condensed the narrative into the more familiar version we cherish today, focusing on Beauty, a kindhearted young woman, and the cursed Beast, who could only break his spell through true love.

Disney’s animated adaptation in 1991 brought Beauty and the Beast to a new generation, with vibrant animation, memorable characters, and an unforgettable musical score by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman. This groundbreaking film was the first animated feature nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. It received two Oscars for its boisterous and unforgettable music.

The film’s success paved the way for a Broadway adaptation in 1994, featuring new songs and deeper character exploration that captivated audiences for more than a decade.

Broadway saw several talented actresses grace the role of Belle, including Susan Egan, Toni Braxton, Kerry Butler and Ashley Brown, each bringing her unique charm and talent to the beloved character. Paige O’Hara, the original voice of Belle, even made special appearances onstage, delighting audiences with her iconic portrayal.

Disney’s live-action adaptation in 2017, starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens, further cemented the story’s place in contemporary culture.

In the knockout production at the Athens Theatre, Emilyann Tobias takes on the role of Belle. Emilyann’s recent credits include notable performances in Irving Berlin’s White Christmas and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.
