Be respectful, and be personally responsible

Editor, The Beacon:

This is in response to an article about the Lake Helen commissioners and their prayer before each meeting. The article raised some questions in my mind.

Why is the atheist uncomfortable with other people praying to God, when he doesn’t believe in God’s existence?

Later in the article, he is quoted saying that he has never said anything to anyone about his being uncomfortable with public prayer or the Pledge of Allegiance. How did the other people in the meeting and the author find out?

Lastly, I agree with the actions taken by Mr. Burton and will suggest one more. To remove any connection of local government with any religion (re: First Amendment), the prayer should take place before the official start of the meeting and should be in a place other than the official meeting place.

In short, Christians need to comply with the rules, but not cave to every whimper by other beliefs. We need to stand up, be heard, and be respectful. It’s a crowded world, folks. War is painful and expensive. Better that we be civil. Recognize others’ rights, be respectful, and be personally responsible.
