Editor, The Beacon:
The Democratic Party has an illustrious history of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Hubert Humphrey, Al Gore and Hillary Clinton all took their turn. And now it appears that the Democrat bigwigs who run the party are not to be outdone.
Despite what any reasonably sane child can see, they continue to push the candidacy of “the almost lifelike” Joe Biden. This is a true “duh” moment in our country’s history. Faced with the peril of an autocracy headed by Trump, one would think that preserving our democracy would be of paramount importance.
Instead, we see Biden’s family and loyalists circling their wagons and pushing their collective heads into the sand; the same sand that their failed predecessors are still wiping from their eyes. President Biden’s achievements should not be understated or diminished. He has had an honorable and distinguished political career. Those who are advising him to continue his candidacy are either blind to the obvious, shackled to party discipline, or both. We can only hope that saner minds prevail in time.
A gracious abdication would be President Biden’s patriotic gift to all Americans. And an open convention in Chicago is the only hope to defeat Trump and save our system of government.
Our country is in a sad state when the choice we have is between a twice impeached narcissistic convicted felon, and a stubborn cognitively suspect incumbent.
I said in jest some time ago that I would vote for a turnip before I would vote for Trump. I sincerely hope it will not come to that.
