With classes for Volusia County public schools beginning Monday, Aug. 12, there are numerous dates offered for students to either meet their teachers for elementary-school children, or orientation for middle- and high-school youth in Volusia County.

Go to the Volusia County Schools website at www.vcsedu.org and look in the directory for school listings. The majority of schools will have listed the days and times. The announcements of open house will take place toward the end of August, as these take place in September.

Elementary schools in West Volusia that have scheduled times to meet teachers and check out classrooms include Blue Lake Elementary in DeLand, with a Meet the Teacher event 10-11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 9, and Citrus Grove Elementary in DeLand on Thursday, Aug. 8, for kindergarten orientation and Meet the Teacher at 6 p.m., and for first through fifth grades 9-11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 9.

For the middle schools, some already did this during the last week in July. Those that are upcoming include Deltona Middle 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, for sixth-graders, and 1-3 p.m. that day for grades seven and eight; Heritage Middle in Deltona has sixth-grade orientation 9-11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 2, and sixth-grade schedule pickup is 9:30 a.m.-noon Thursday, Aug. 8, and seventh- and eighth-grade schedule pickup is 1-3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8. River Springs Middle in Orange City has schedule pickups for all grades 4:30-6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7.

The majority of the high schools had schedule pickups, laptop pickups, ID pickups and the purchase of parking decals and lunch passes during the latter part of July.

Volusia County schools have extended-day activities for elementary- and middle-school students for the school year of 2024-25. The Extended Day Enrichment Program (EDEP) is for kindergarten through fifth grade, while Before the Bell (BTB) is for sixth through eighth grades.

The BTB will take place at 10 middle schools, while 40 elementary schools will have EDEP, including Blue Lake, Citrus Grove, Deltona Lakes, Discovery, Enterprise, Forest Lake, Freedom, Friendship, George Marks, Manatee Cove, McInnis, Orange City, Osteen, Pierson, Pride, Spirit, Sunrise, Timbercrest, Volusia Pines and Woodward Avenue. Check with your school for information and registration for these programs.

Bank of America has a Student Leadership Program that is an eight-week paid summer internship connecting students to employment, skills development and service. These community-minded students will gain practical work and leadership experience and receive financial education coaching through Bank of America’s Better Money Habits curriculum, while working with local nonprofits and earning competitive wages.

The Student Leaders program recognizes 300 community-focused juniors and seniors from across the U.S. annually. This year, two were selected from the East Central Florida area; they are Reha Patel of Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy and Grecia Perazzo of Spruce High School in Port Orange. Connect with your local Bank of America if you have an interest in this program.

The monthly book sales at the DeLand Regional Library will take place in the library auditorium Friday, Aug. 9, and Saturday, Aug. 10. Monies from these monthly sales help support children, youth and adult programs, plus summer reading programs for youth, large-print books and any special equipment or supplies not budgeted. The sale is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

DeLand High School

The DeLand High School girls weightlifting team is getting an earlier start on their fundraising for apparel, equipment, travel and pre-meet meals by looking for those who would be interested in advertising banners that hang on the fence of DeLand High facing Hill and Plymouth avenues for the entire school year. The cost is $1,000 per banner. Email coach Damion Dunn at dddunn@volusia.k12.fl.us.
