The Unitarian Universalists of DeLand’s Social Justice Committee is stepping up its efforts to tackle voter apathy with a new and impactful initiative: a letter-to-the-editor writing campaign designed to increase voter engagement and activity in our community. In this crucial election, under the dedicated leadership of Patti Rausch and Paul Garfinkel, this campaign aims to turn voter indifference into active participation.

The first meeting of the campaign took place Aug. 4, facilitated by teacher Rowena Waters. Attendees learned how to write effective and concise letters to local newspapers about critical issues on this year’s ballot.

“We’re excited to see so many people come together to make a difference,” said Rausch. “It’s all about connecting with our neighbors and ensuring that everyone’s voice is heard this election.”

Other scheduled activities include documentary viewing, phone banking, canvassing and voter education. The next meeting is noon-2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, at the UU church at 116 S. Clara Ave. in DeLand.

The public is welcome to attend and lend a hand. No prior experience is needed. Be sure to bring your enthusiasm and a willingness to make a positive impact. For more information, or to get involved, email Unitarian Universalists of DeLand at firstuuofwestvolusiadeland@gmail.com.
