Teens and adults need good books

Editor, The Beacon:

I have been going to the Volusia County Public Library for eight years. Recently, I have started to visit their teen section and have noticed it is looking a bit depleted. It is about a quarter of the size of the children’s section, and a third or more of it is nonfiction and graphic novels, not traditional books.

A lot of youth today constantly spend time on their screens. Most times I go to the teen section, the only teens in there are on the computers.

Therefore, it should be our mission to provide the few teen readers left with interesting, clean books that might even entice nonreaders to read.

A good way to do this would be to condense the books that are rarely, if ever, touched. The spaces left behind could be filled with intriguing, appropriate books. However, this should be the first step, not the last. The young adults who strive to read today deserve to have good books.
Sincerely,
