Children tearing up the lacrosse field in Volusia County? Unheard of! That is, until a few homeschool families fell in love with the sport. And just like that, history — or perhaps her-story — began.
That’s right! Volusia Lacrosse is a boys and girls lacrosse group for homeschool kids ages 7-17, where both boys and girls play a modified version of boys lacrosse. Our players have begun with little to no knowledge of the sport and are evolving into strong, determined, team-playing athletes.
As homeschooling is a growing trend among families in Florida, and considering our roots in homeschooling, Volusia Lacrosse has originated as a homeschool program conducted during traditional school hours but, as interest continues to grow, we plan to include an after-school-hours option to introduce even more of our youth to lacrosse.
By the end of our first season, spring 2024, we had 18 players participating at our weekly practices and game nights.
Fall season has just started, and we are currently practicing at Chuck Lennon Park in DeLeon Springs on their baseball field, as no lacrosse fields exist in Volusia County parks.
The sport of lacrosse being played in Volusia County is unique in itself, but add in the extraordinary dynamics of our multiage players, involved parents, and devoted coach, and this new program is something we are immensely proud to be offering and expanding into our community.
Our team still dreams of playing on a real lacrosse field, complete with authentic lacrosse field markings in precise positions. While we have secured the site and constructed the field, your assistance is still needed! To raise funds for our incorporation fees, driveway enhancements for a more stable entryway to our field, and the purchase of a portable bathroom, we are organizing a fundraising car wash and a team selling event at the Farmers Market this fall. Our players’ wish list includes materials for building benches and new uniforms someday.
