Temple Israel hosts ‘Run for Their Lives’ march

Temple Israel DeLand hosted a “Run for Their Lives” march on the one-year anniversary of Hama’s attack on Israel and the terrorist group’s taking of Israeli hostages to the Gaza Strip. Since last year, the temple has been hosting weekly marches every Sunday at 9 a.m. to raise awareness about the ongoing hostage situation in Gaza. The march begins at the Wayne G. Sanborn Activity Center in Earl Brown Park in DeLand, and anyone can join.

Stephanie Brenner and Jenna Brody led the cause on Oct. 6 to speak about the issue overseas. Brody explained that she saw the “Run 4 Their Lives” campaign on Instagram and decided she wanted to get the local Jewish community involved in spreading awareness.

“They come from 24 different countries,” Brody said of the hostages in Gaza.

The color used by the group for the run is red, symbolizing the hair color of a young child who is currently held hostage in Gaza. The group then sang uplifting songs and viewed photos of the hostages they were walking for.

The walk lasts 18 minutes, symbolizing the freedom of movement that the hostages currently don’t have.
