City and county officials gathered on Thursday, Oct. 31, to celebrate the grand opening of the newest section of the Charles Paiva Greenway, a 1.35-mile trail that goes from East Minnesota Avenue to U.S.Highway 92. This latest addition connects Earl Brown Park to Stetson University’s campus.
Named after current City Commissioner and Vice Mayor Charles Paiva, who has been with the city for two decades, the greenway offers residents a trail to enjoy with friends and family. Mayor Chris Cloudman expressed his approval of the project noting, “This is a wonderful day for our community. Not only does this project create a beautiful outdoor space for everyone to enjoy, but it also encourages healthier, more active lifestyles.” The $1.5 million project was made possible by the Volusia ECHO program, which funds projects benefiting the environment, culture, history, and outdoor recreation in Volusia County.
In the future, DeLand city commissioners have plans to extend the Charles Paiva Greenway, including a connection to the new DeLand SunRail station to the west and an extension along the upcoming extension of Beresford Avenue to the east.
“We are truly grateful for the support from our county leaders and partners who made this project happen,” added Mayor Cloudman. “We can’t wait to see how this greenway will continue to enrich our community.”
