Gratitude

All are invited to Unitarian Universalists of DeLand’s 10:30 a.m. service Sunday, Nov. 10, to ponder the idea of gratitude. UU DeLand member George Crofts will discuss the idea.

The ancients understood the benefits of gratitude, as seen from the quote “Take full account of what excellencies you possess and, in gratitude, remember how you would hanker after them if you had them not,” attributed to Marcus Aurelius.

Crofts suggests that we remember anger and frustration, but dwell on gratitude.

Unitarian Universalists are an inclusive, freethinking, faith community, where all are welcome, as everyone learns and searches together for truth.

Veterans Sunday at 1st Church DeLand

Veterans Sunday is Nov. 10, when First Church DeLand will honor our brave men and women in the armed forces.

“Row With a Purpose” is the new series presented by Pastor Mark Bitner. The Nov. 10 sermon title is “Eyes Wide Open.” Our military veterans were trained to be alert at all times during war. Eyes wide open certainly would have meant life or death for each.

We should ask ourselves if our eyes are open for the chance to help someone. Are we cognizant of a plea for help, a need to be filled, or a desperate person who can’t help themselves?

Simply walking down Woodland Boulevard, we cross paths with numerous folks who are afraid to ask for help. They may not know that if they were to ask, someone could point them in the direction where help can be found. Is that someone you?

In this church, we grab an oar when we see an area that needs our special touch and attention. Join the congregation of First Church DeLand at one of the church’s three services, and grab an oar!

The power of chakras

The congregation of Mosaic Unitarian Universalist meets online at 11 a.m. every Sunday. The Nov. 10 service is titled “Root to Crown: Unveiling the Power of Chakras.”

The congregation says, “Join us for an enlightening presentation by Dr. Rajni Shankar-Brown, as she delves into the fascinating world of chakras — ancient energy centers believed to influence our physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. We’ll explore the historical origins of the chakra system, tracing its roots from ancient Indian traditions to its contemporary applications.

“Discover the significance of each of the seven primary chakras, from the grounding Root Chakra to the transcendent Crown Chakra, and learn how these energy centers impact various aspects of our lives. This presentation will also provide insights into Chakra symbolism and practical ways to harmonize these vital energy points for holistic wellness.”

Judy Raymond will be the service leader. Everyone is welcome!

Give it all to Jesus

On Sunday, Nov. 10, First Presbyterian Church of DeLand’s Associate Pastor Cassandra Riker will focus on the significance of giving. Pastor Riker will invite listeners to renew a spirit of giving.

As we exit our church’s season of stewardship and enter the season of holiday giving, Christians are planning to thank friends, family and organizations. Sharing time and possessions does occupy our thoughts.

The Gospel of Mark 12:13-17 describes the widow who offered only two copper coins, about whom Jesus says, “This poor widow, out of her poverty, put in everything — all she has to live on!” Pastor Riker will ask parishioners to ponder giving thanks to God for all he has given us. How can we honor and thank the Lord?  Perhaps learning from the enormous generosity of the widow’s two copper coins?

This Saturday, Nov. 9, God’s Bathhouse volunteers will furnish private showers, clean donated clothing items, manna bags, refreshments and friendly conversation from 9 to 11 a.m. in the church courtyard.

First Pres presents a new outreach mission near the front sidewalk on North Woodland Boulevard. There, people will find refreshment for humans and pets from a new drinking-water fountain.

The deadline for the Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes to journey around the world nears. Children will enjoy small gifts and the messages of God’s love wrapped by volunteers. Deliver your boxes of appropriate items to Fellowship Hall by Wednesday, Nov. 20. See the church’s website to learn about approved items and how to build a box.

The popular Pavilion Cookouts on second Wednesdays resume Nov. 13. From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., church members and friends will gather for grilled food supplied by the church kitchen, with sides and desserts brought by participants. First Pres will provide plates, utensils, napkins and beverages.
