Prepare to be transported into the heartwarming and transformative world of A Christmas Carol! This timeless tale has enchanted audiences since its publication in 1843, evolving from a Victorian classic into a beloved holiday staple celebrated in countless adaptations.

Charles Dickens’ poignant story of Ebenezer Scrooge — a miser changed by the spirit of Christmas — invites us to rediscover the power of compassion, generosity and redemption. The Athens Theatre in DeLand is thrilled to bring this enchanting narrative to life, running Friday, Nov. 22, through Sunday, Dec. 15, inviting you to immerse yourself in the magic of the season.

FRIENDS INDEED — Tiny Tim, played by Zoey Natal, gains a new friend in Scrooge after his soul-stirring transformation.

Set against the backdrop of profound social change during the industrial revolution, A Christmas Carol emerged as a clarion call for kindness in a world often overshadowed by greed and despair. Dickens poured his heart into crafting a story that reflects the struggles of the less fortunate. In just six weeks, he penned this beloved tale, illuminating the pressing need for empathy and connection during a time of immense inequality.

From its first edition, which sold out by Christmas Eve, to the 13 printings by 1844, Dickens’ novella ignited a cultural revival, emphasizing the significance of togetherness. His vivid portrayal of the Christmas spirit serves as a timeless reminder that, even in our darkest moments, happiness can be found in the warmth of human connection.

At its core, A Christmas Carol teaches us that joy springs from the well of generosity and empathy. Scrooge’s journey — illuminated by the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Christmas Yet to Come — reveals the profound truth that our choices shape not only our identities but also the world around us. This experience invites us to reflect on our own lives, urging us to embrace the possibility of change. Scrooge’s evolution challenges us to confront our own actions, reminding us that it’s never too late to rewrite our narratives, to open our hearts, and to reconnect with one another.

In this production, Michael Funaro (Spamalot, Sweeney Todd, Les Misérables and Inherit the Wind) reprises his role as Scrooge from 2022’s Scrooge, The Musical.

Gavin Waid (Le Nozze di Figaro, Into the Woods, Ragtime and Chicago) portrays Bob Cratchit, while Gabriel Hannans takes on the roles of Marley and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.

Jandrea Novak (White Christmas, Jersey Boys and Your Mom’s in My Top 8) is cast as the Ghost of Christmas Past. Tad Kincade (Young Frankenstein, The Full Monty, To Kill a Mockingbird and Spamalot) portrays the Ghost of Christmas Present, and Zoey Natal (Beauty and the Beast and Frozen Jr.) plays Tiny Tim.

Niffer Clarke, an accomplished theater/voice instructor and coach, known for her extensive work directing world premieres for First Stage and productions at Marquette University and the University of Pittsburgh, directed this stellar production.

Live music, under the direction of Chris Endsley, enhances the magic, featuring talented musicians including Stacey Flowers on violin, Juan Ceballos on cello, Laura Firth on violin and Sean Strott on bass.

Don’t miss the special events: A complimentary champagne toast on opening night, an ASL/English-interpreted performance Friday, Dec. 6, and an audio-described performance Sunday, Dec. 8. They’ll also host their annual toy drive for The Neighborhood Center, with donation boxes available in the lobby at every performance.

As audiences gather for the Athens Theatre’s rendition of A Christmas Carol, they will not only experience a beloved classic, but also engage with its deeply resonant messages.

In a world often filled with strife, Dickens’ timeless lesson shines bright: We each hold the power to change the world, one act of kindness at a time.
