Editor, The Beacon:
We often hear it said that elections have consequences. For me, the personal consequences of this election were incredibly rewarding beyond my wildest expectations. And for that, I am extremely grateful. For that, I thank you.
Yes, the voters had their say. I respect the voters, and I respect their decision. But the positive impacts for me of the past 18 months will last long after the final vote is counted.
So what did I learn? For starters, I learned that my love and appreciation for Volusia County is boundless and resilient. I feel exceedingly blessed by the opportunities that the campaign gave me to meet so many of you and discuss your hopes, dreams, aspirations, concerns and priorities. It was truly a great honor and an incredible experience that has deeply impacted my life.
Although I have long loved Volusia County, this experience gave me an even greater appreciation for the people and places that make our county such a special place.
I also was reminded of just how deeply Volusia County voters are engaged and invested in the political process. You need not look any further than the record-high voter turnout for confirmation that our residents are serious about their politics. And that fills me with a sense of pride and makes me hopeful about our future.
I also learned that going through the process of running for county chair for the past 18 months has made me a better person. It has re-committed me to the ideals of service above self. And it has re-dedicated me to my commitment to continue working to improve our county and to continue blessing others, just as I have been blessed. And I have the voters of Volusia County to thank for that!

Most of what I learned about Randy was from my brother Gary, who ran his election campaign. Then I did some reading of my own. I believe that his love for Volusia County is evident in his thought and deeds. Randy represented himself with class and dignity. Congratulations on your effort and grace in defeat.
