This December, the Athens Theatre in DeLand presents a holiday lineup filled with big-band swing, local talent and a touch of Victorian mystery. From festive music and community spirit to ghostly tales, each show offers a unique way to embrace the season!
On Wednesday, Dec. 18, the Great American Big Band (formerly the Orlando Big Band) will kick off the season with two unforgettable performances at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Under the lively direction of Bennett Harmon, this 20-piece ensemble, joined by four talented vocalists, will fill the Athens Theatre with the sounds of classic holiday tunes.
Harmon, ever the showman in his signature sequined smoking jacket, leads the band in performing timeless songs made famous by icons like Dean Martin, Rosemary Clooney, the Andrews Sisters, Glenn Miller and more — each in their authentic big-band arrangements. This spectacular, family-friendly event is bursting with festive joy, offering a vibrant, nostalgic celebration of the holidays.
Gather your loved ones and get swept up in the festive spirit as the Great American Big Band takes you on a musical journey through the most wonderful time of the year!
On Saturday, Dec. 21, at 7 p.m., join the Athens family for “A Very Merry Athens Holiday,” a special community fundraiser that brings together holiday cheer and a spirit of giving. This heartwarming event will feature performances by the talented Athens Theatre family, the Athens Theatre Youth Academy and special guests, as they fill the stage with music, laughter and joy.
The evening celebrates both the season and the resilience of our community. After Hurricane Milton, the Athens Theatre faced $65,000 in damages and lost revenue. By purchasing a ticket, you’re helping to ensure the theater remains a beloved landmark for generations to come.
Hosted by Chad Conley, this festive night will feature a guest appearance from DeLand’s very own Mayor Chris Cloudman, who will be appearing as jolly Santa Claus! Bring your loved ones to this unforgettable night of music, magic and generosity.
Finally, on Sunday, Dec. 22, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., Phantasmagoria presents “An Even More Haunted Victorian Christmas,” a spooky twist on holiday traditions. In true Victorian style, this eerie performance takes you on a journey through centuries-old ghost stories told around the winter fires. With haunting puppetry, enchanting music and atmospheric projections, Phantasmagoria’s acclaimed cast brings each tale to life, blending holiday spirit with an unforgettable dash of the supernatural. Now in its 15th season at the Athens Theatre, Phantasmagoria invites you to experience the mystery, magic and thrill of a holiday tradition from long ago, including everyone’s all-time favorite, The Canterville Ghost!
Celebrate the season with a little something for everyone! The Athens Theatre is your destination for holiday magic.
