This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, a significant moment in American history that reaffirmed our nation’s commitment to justice and equality. This legislation addressed widespread discrimination across the nation and set the stage for future efforts to create a more equitable society.

Enacted in 1964, the Civil Rights Act prohibited discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin. It established the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to address workplace discrimination, created the Community Relations Service to help resolve local disputes, authorized federal intervention to desegregate schools and public facilities, and placed limits on literacy tests for voter registration.

While we recognize its achievements, we also acknowledge that the journey continues.

As chair of the Florida Commission on Human Relations, I am committed to preventing unlawful discrimination and ensuring that all people in Florida are treated fairly and have access to opportunities in employment, housing and public accommodations. The Commission enforces Florida’s civil rights laws and serves as a resource on human relations for Floridians.

As we commemorate this anniversary, we must reaffirm our dedication to the principles of equality and justice for all. It is essential for everyone to engage in the ongoing effort to end discrimination and work toward a society where everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed.

Let us use this anniversary to celebrate 60 years of progress and renew our commitment to the work that remains. The legacy of the Civil Rights Act calls us to uphold the values of justice, equality and human dignity.
