God’s Bathhouse suffers devastating loss

The organization provides clean showers to those in need. One truck remains, and a representative told The Beacon they are already working to obtain a new truck.

God’s Bathhouse, a mobile hygiene unit for homeless individuals in Volusia County, was traveling back from First Presbyterian Church on Nov. 30.

The driver, Elgia Glass, had just hopped out of the vehicle to open a gate when the engine suddenly started smoking.

Within minutes, the front of the mobile unit was in flames. The DeLand Fire Department responded and quickly put out the fire.

Mary Hoffmann, a member of the Bathhouse Ministry group, said the loss of the truck was a blow, but that there is still one more truck in operation.

“They travel all over Volusia County to offer showers and clothing,” Hoffmann said. “These trucks are very important to those in need.”

“The loss of this truck, which required so much time and effort to retrofit, and which served so many, is devastating to the Bathhouse family,” the organization wrote on their website. “Please keep the Bathhouse in your prayers at this difficult time.”
