The West Volusia Artists are highlighting Maritza Longtin as their Artist of the Month for January. Her intensely textured acrylic piece is titled Frozen Paradise. It is meant “to focus on the beauty of the world around us especially in the winter time,” Longtin said.
Longtin was born in Cuba. Her family immigrated to the U.S. in 1960, when she was 12. She was unprepared for life in America, having to learn a new language and adjust to a new life.
While in junior high school in Miami, her art teacher, Mr. Dimeo, introduced her to art and painting, which gave her a way to express herself. She credits God for all her blessings, and that is reflected in her art. Nine years ago, her family moved to DeLand. Longtin has taken lessons at the Florida State Institute for Art and attended the University of Miami, as well as numerous classes and workshops.
She has exhibited in New Smyrna Beach, Ormond Beach, Lake Mary, Fort Lauderdale and Gateway Center for the Arts in DeBary. Longtin appreciates the other artists who have encouraged her talent. For would-be artists, she says, “Learn, practice and do not stop, because it is a privilege to create.”
She considers her family to be her biggest blessing, enjoying spending time with her husband, her two daughters’ families and five beautiful grandchildren.
Longtin has been a member of the West Volusia Artists for two years. The club meets 9 a.m.-noon on first and third Fridays at the Wayne G. Sanborn Activity Center at 815 S. Alabama Ave. in DeLand.
Club events include plein-air painting, art demos, field trips, art shows and paint and share sessions. All levels of experience are welcome. For more information, call club President Melinda Cummings at 386-846-3330.
