Deltona to buy house for flood control
BEACON PHOTO/AL EVERSON; SHUT DOWN — Flooding was so bad Sunday, Oct. 9, 2022, in Deltona that roads like Leland Drive, pictured above, were closed.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Florida Division of Emergency Management are eyeing a home on Deltona’s east side to head off future flooding.

The City of Deltona has applied to FEMA for a grant to purchase a house along Riverhead Drive for possible acquisition and demolition. The specific address, as identified by a house number, has not been released.

If the city receives a grant from FEMA and purchases the property, the city will keep ownership of the parcel as open space or a possible retention pond.

The disclosure about the city’s interest in acquire the home and lot came about as a result of damage caused by Hurricane Ian in 2022. Other properties may also be subject to a buyout from the city. Approximately 250 homes in Deltona were flooded because of Ian’s rains.
