Class Notes: Stetson releases schedules for baseball and softball

Baseball and softball season is just around the corner. Noting that, Stetson University has released its spring schedule for both sports. Softball season for the Lady Hatters will begin Friday, Feb. 7, while Hatter baseball opens Friday, Feb. 14.

The baseball team starts off with a road (plane) trip to Puerto Rico, where the Hats will face UConn, Penn State, Missouri and Michigan before coming home for the home season-opener at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, against the University of Maryland – Baltimore County (UMBC), followed the next day with a game against Iowa at 5 p.m., and at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, against Notre Dame.

Other interesting home games will be against Florida, Indiana, UCF, USF, Bethune-Cookman and the ASUN teams, and the team travels to Miami, BYU, Florida, USF and FSU, as well as ASUN teams.

The Lady Hatter softball team will be playing host to four invites, while traveling to one. They play host to the Frank Griffin Classic Feb. 7-9, the Hatter Classic Feb. 14-16, the Stetson Invitational Feb. 21-23, and the John B Invite March 7-9. They will travel to the U. of Georgia Tournament Feb. 26-March 1.

Some of the teams besides the ASUN teams they will face at home include Fairleigh Dickinson, Binghamton, Chattanooga, Wofford, Bethune-Cookman, FAU, Marist, Long Island, Bryant, USC Upstate, Quinnipiac, Arizona State, UCF, USF and Florida. While at Georgia, they will face Ohio State, Georgia and the University of Maryland – Baltimore County. The team will travel to FSU and Florida.

 

Volusia County Schools

There will be no school Monday, Jan. 20, so that everyone can observe the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Holiday.

Athletic shoes are required for PE class per District Policy 217; no slides, flip-flops or crocs are allowed.

 

DeBary Elementary School

DeBary Elementary School won Best Walking Group in the DeBary Christmas Parade.

 

Enterprise Elementary School

Enterprise Elementary School participated in the Great American Teach-In. Those community members who participated were DeBary Mayor Karen Chasez, Easterseals, Heartwood Events, Sanford County Fire and Rescue, and Eagle Pest Services.

 

Freedom Elementary School

First-grade dual-language teacher Ligia Winter has been nominated for the New Teacher Academy at Freedom Elementary School in DeLand.

 

Spirit Elementary School

On the last day of school prior to the Winter Holiday, Spirit Elementary School in Deltona had two students selected to shadow the principal and assistant principal. Principal Laura Figueroa was shadowed by first-grader George Gbur, and Assistant Principal William Goldsmith was shadowed by third-grader Gabriel Chavez.

 

Southwestern Middle School

The Teachers of the Month at Southwestern Middle School in DeLand for the months of October and November have been announced. Culinary teacher Rosa Salgado received the honor for October. For November, civics teacher Catherine Zarro received the honor.

 

DeLand High School

Several FFA members at DeLand High School have earned honors at the subdistrict competition. Maggie Larriviere was elected as the District VI subdistrict chair. Justin “Ty” Davis took first place in safe tractor operations, Emme Siegmeister won first in creed speaking, Lacy Box took first in prepared public speaking, and Ava Siegmeister won the extemporaneous public speaking competition.

The parliamentary procedure team of Malia Sabatini, Zach Mosley, A. Siegmeister, Adalyn Goodwin, Mia Portillo and Madelyn Wright placed second.

The first-place winners move on to district competition in January.

 

Deltona High School

The Incoming Freshman Showcase at Deltona High School will be 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23. This is for those middle-school students who are slated to go to Deltona High as freshmen.

While at the showcase, students and parents will explore the career academies, CTE programs, performing arts and college/career readiness opportunities that Deltona High has to offer. Visitors will be able to walk the campus and meet the teachers.

 

Pine Ridge High School

The horse-judging team at Pine Ridge High School in Deltona is advancing to the state preliminaries.

 

University High School

FAFSA Financial Aid Night for University High School in Orange City will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, in the media center. Daytona State College will be there to help complete FAFSA applications.

The University HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America) team had an outstanding performance at the Space Coast Regional Competition, which had hundreds of students competing. Kaden Martin took second in prepared speaking, Sydney Sawtelle was second in phlebotomy, Katie Blix earned fifth in pharmacy science, and the mental health promotion team of Rachel Edmands, Kelsie Morgan, Bryce Robson and Josie O’Quinn took fifth. Martin and Sawtelle scored high enough to advance to the state competition coming up in Orlando.

 

Football

On Jan. 2, the Under Armour All-American Football Game, which was nationally televised, was played in DeLand’s Spec Martin Memorial Stadium. Team Icon defeated Team Unstoppable, 31-19.

Some DeLand High School superlatives for the 2024 season determined by MaxPrep found junior Marceles Carey averaging 62.6 yards receiving per game. Freshman Taihj Moore averaged 125.5 yards carrying per game, while returning 11 kickoffs and 16 punt returns for 535 yards, along with 22 touchdowns, of which 19 were on the ground.

Sophomore quarterback Gardner Nordman threw 15 touchdowns and had a 61-percent completion rate. Junior Joshua Bradshaw had 70 tackles or 8.8 per game, while sophomore Niko Woodward had five sacks. Senior Michael Hamilton made three interceptions, and sophomore Cristian Baez made 50 of 53 PAT kicks.

 

DeLand High School Athletics

During the week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, the boys and girls basketball teams at DeLand High School were active. The Bulldog boys downed Jacksonville Episcopal, 57-48, and lost to Gaston (Georgia) Christian, 66-48. The Lady Bulldogs defeated North Miami, 56-41, and Wekiva, 55-38, who topped DeLand the day before, 43-40. The team lost to NFEI (North Florida Education Institute), 52-25.

The DeLand boys weightlifting team enters its 2025 season Tuesday, Jan. 28, with a home match in the Bulldog gym at 4:30 p.m., competing against Matanzas and New Smyrna Beach. The team will be hosting the Five Star JV meet and varsity meets, as well as the regional meet. Damion Dunn is the Bulldog coach.

Saturday, Jan. 18, has the girl weightlifters at the Lake Wales Invitational at noon, while the wrestlers go to the East River Tournament.

Tuesday, Jan. 21, has the boys basketball team at home against DME at 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.

On Wednesday, Jan. 22, the girl weightlifters go to district in hopes of qualifying for state, and the girls basketball team hosts Viera at 7 p.m.

On Thursday, Jan. 23, the Boone boys basketball team comes to the Bulldog gym at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

 

Stetson University

Besides the freshman class being new to the campus and DeLand, Stetson University had several appointees arriving in administrative positions. These include Erin Doggette, Ph.D., as director of diversity and inclusion; Ricky Ray as athletic director; and Kyle Longest, Ph.D., as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

 

Stetson University basketball

After Christmas, the Stetson University men faced the University of Florida, No. 6 in the NCAA rankings, losing, 85-45, with Mehki Ellison scoring 15 points, with five rebounds and two steals. The team also lost to Queens in the ASUN-opener, 96-87, with Jordan Wood scoring 25 points, with one block and two steals. Ellison scored 23 points, Abramo Canka made 12 points and two blocks, and Josh Massey added 10 points and six rebounds.

The Lady Hats, in the ASUN-opener, stopped West Georgia, 79-64, with Cameron Thomas scoring 21 points and Shelby Calhoun making 14 points and five rebounds. Promise Keshi and Diawna Carter-Hartley each scored 11 points.

Saturday, Jan. 18, has the men at home against West Georgia at 4 p.m., while the women go to Central Arkansas at 2 p.m.

On Thursday, Jan. 23, the men go to Eastern Kentucky, with starting time to be announced, while the women come home against Eastern Kentucky at 7 p.m.

 

College honors

Austin Peay State University, in Clarksville, Tennessee, is proud to recognize Christian Pastrana, of Deltona, who was named to the dean’s list for academic achievement during the fall 2024 semester.

Kendall Anderson, of DeLand, has been named to the fall 2024 President’s List at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro.

Jose Montenegro, of Deltona, has been named to the dean’s list at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Illinois.

Josiah Hilton and Gracyn Hilton, both of Orange City, have been named to the dean’s honor list at Cedarville University for the fall 2024 semester. Cedarville University is in Cedarville, Ohio.
