Nestled on the north side of DeLand, just off U.S. Highway 17, the Boulevard Motel has been a local fixture for 68 years.

William Crow, the new owner, has a long history in real estate, having managed more than 20 properties over his career.

Crow bought the motel in 2023 for $1.3 million and invested another $300,000 in renovations. Originally, his plan was to turn the property into Section 8 housing to serve Volusia County’s low-income and transient population. However, zoning issues prevented that vision from becoming a reality.

“If you’re not on the same page as the county planners, it won’t work,” Crow said.

While his initial plan didn’t pan out, running the motel as a regular business has still been profitable. Crow estimates he’ll recoup his initial investment in three years.

“You can’t do that with most other investment ventures,” he said.

Looking ahead, Crow plans to repave the parking lot and add a kids’ play area and focus on creating a safe, family-friendly environment.

  1. Having been a life long residence for 40+ years i went thru DeLand just the other day from the north to the south end of Woodland Blvd. DeLand has lost the charming quaint appeal. There seemed to be buildings approved and erected that took away from the visual achievements I saw that “Mainstreet DeLand” had accomplished. What happened?

  2. In 1976 my family stayed in a little cottage behind the main motel with two bedrooms and a kitchenette for several weeks in our transition between our home in south Florida and our home in Deltona. We have such happy memories of that time at the Boulevard Motel. It just feels right to see it’s new life.
