New Smyrna Beach’s Sugar Works Distillery manager Tyler Hollingsworth has one goal in mind when designing a bar event: shake —- or even stir—- the expectations of what a night out at the local watering hole might entail by infusing a level of creativity into the experience.

Hollingsworth is gearing up to host a bartending competition on Jan. 20 that will bring together patrons and local bartenders to revel in the excitement, knowledge and community that is unique to the hospitality industry.

Bartending is a practice rooted in inventiveness; a good mixologist (a bartender trained to create unique drinks) has an open mind and isn’t afraid to experiment with textures, colors, fragrances and flavors. An experienced mixologist is prepared to expose you to a world of drinks that far surpass the flavors of your typical gin and tonic.

The bar menu at Sugar Works Distillery, carefully crafted by Hollingsworth, reflects the adventurous and sophisticated palate of a seasoned mixologist.

For Hollingsworth, a daily trip to the local grocery store, Perrine’s Produce, helps inspire his creative cocktails. The bourbon drink with the flavor profile of Mexican street corn which the produce aisle sparked may not be the everyman’s first choice but it reflects the almost encyclopedic knowledge of the tastes and techniques that can elevate any beverage. He also encourages all of his coworkers to refer to “The Flavor Bible” — a reference guide to all things culinary exploration.

“A bartender should never feel limited by their surroundings but, instead, feel inspired to create something new and exciting,” Hollingsworth said.

Exploration is the name of the game for those who opt for the bar’s Dealer’s Choice drink. When a thirsty customer orders this drink, the bartender will craft a tailored creation based on the patron’s preferences.

This is the type of inventiveness Hollingsworth hopes to see from other bartenders in this competition.

“All drinks can be fun to make but I love when people trust us with the ‘Dealer’s Choice’ drink we have on our menu,” Hollingsworth said.

Creativity, play, and community are the guiding factors for Locals Only.

“I’ve done bartending competitions for years and one thing I really enjoy about them is how much everyone wants to see others succeed. Even though each bartender would love to win – there really is not a snobbiness or coldness amongst competitors,” Hollingsworth said. “It’s just a great way to celebrate the art, network with other bartenders and cheer each other on. I hope attendees can value how collaborative of an environment bartending can really be. I hope they get to see how creative of an outlet it is.”

Bartenders are asked to submit an original recipe and will have the opportunity to bring their creation to life. Creativity in both recipe and presentation are two of the most important judging categories.

The competition will take place on Monday, January 20th at Sugar Works Distillery, located at 214 N. Orange Street in New Smyrna Beach, and will take place from 5 p.m. until the winner is announced.

After the winner has been announced an after party will commence on site which will feature live music from a local artist, fresh libations and food provided by Prima’s Kitchen, a pizza restaurant located in New Smyrna Beach’s Canal Street District.

Flyers with information about how to sign up for the competition have been provided to over 30 bars and restaurants in the New Smyrna Beach area but those looking for more information can call (386) 463-0120.
