Since its debut, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella has captivated audiences worldwide, becoming a staple of theatrical storytelling. Adapted from the beloved fairy tale, this version infuses the story with musical elegance only Rodgers & Hammerstein could create.
A DREAM IS A WISH YOUR HEART MAKES — Cinderella (played by Kate Budzinski) and the Prince (played by Jordan Williams) share their iconic dance.
The Cinderella story has origins dating back centuries, with versions appearing in cultures worldwide. From ancient Egypt and China, to Charles Perrault’s iconic 1697 telling, the tale has evolved while maintaining its core themes of hope and perseverance. Its enduring popularity speaks to its universal appeal — the victory of virtue. In a world often overshadowed by hardship, Cinderella remains a beacon of optimism, teaching the value of compassion and self-belief.
Cinderella is more than a story of a girl, a prince and a glass slipper. It’s a celebration of the human spirit — a testament to the belief that, even in the face of adversity, kindness prevails over cruelty. In this Rodgers & Hammerstein adaptation, audiences will be swept away by unforgettable songs like “In My Own Little Corner” and “Ten Minutes Ago,” which have become cherished standards in musical theater.
In collaboration with the Athens Theatre Youth Academy, this production brings new vitality and charm to the classic. The Athens production stars the talented Kate Budzinski as Cinderella; her dazzling performance follows roles such as Elle in Legally Blonde Jr. and Anna in Frozen Jr.
Jordan Williams makes his debut as the Prince, bringing heartfelt charisma to the role, following standout performances in Hadestown: Teen Edition and Mean Girls at Theatre West End.
Nohely Gomez, a seasoned performer on the Athens Theatre’s stage, fiercely portrays the morally bankrupt Stepmother, while Maegan Feldman and Penelope Wolek deliver hilariously wicked turns as the Stepsisters Portia and Joy.
Behind the scenes, the magic continues with an exceptional creative team. Christie Young, making her Athens Theatre directorial debut, brings extensive experience as a performer and director, including roles in Beauty and the Beast among others. Lauren Stromak brings her expertise from choreographing productions like Legally Blonde Jr. and Frozen Jr. Tori Rathbun musically directs, with credits including Matilda Jr. and The Fantasticks.
Finally, Tamara Marke-Lares, the theater’s resident costume designer, adds her artistry to every stitch, creating stunning visuals that breathe life into this beloved fairy tale.
This production ensures accessibility for all with special performances, including an ASL/English-interpreted show Friday, Feb. 7, and an audio-described performance Sunday, Feb. 9. These efforts reflect the Athens Theatre’s commitment to sharing the arts with everyone in our community.
DRUDGERY — Cinderella (played by Kate Budzinski) dreams of a happier life as she toils away for her ungrateful family.
