According to Volusia County Animal Services, the two dogs involved in a fatal attack on an 8-year-old boy Jan. 13 will be euthanized today.
Michael Millett, 8, was riding his bike in a neighborhood in north DeLand when he stopped to pet the dogs. The encounter was brutal and fatal for the boy.
The pair of mixed breed dogs — one a Catahoula breed, the other, a pit bull terrier mix — were captured by Animal Control after the fatal attack and held in quarantine.
A state-mandated 10-day waiting period for the owner, Amanda Franco, to appeal or relinquish ownership is over, officials said. The 10-day wait was due in part to the lack of prior reports of aggression for the dogs, although officials reported the pair were known to run free in the area.
Franco has not been charged in the attack, although Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said his goal is to charge the owner with negligent homicide.
