They will have a rootin’, tootin’ good time at Tex’s Dude Ranch, as they rehearse the musical Donkey Tales. The life and legacy of John Lewis

The congregation of Mosaic Unitarian Universalist meets online at 11 a.m. every Sunday. The Feb. 9 service is titled “Marching Forward: The Enduring Legacy of Congressman John Lewis.”

Dr. Rajni Shankar-Brown will illuminate the extraordinary life and legacy of the Honorable U.S. Rep. John Robert Lewis, one of her mentors, and one of the most revered and influential figures in American history. Explore the transformative role Lewis played in the civil rights movement and his lifelong dedication to standing up against injustice.

Weaving history, narrative, poetry and art, Dr. Shankar-Brown will discuss the profound impact of Congressman Lewis, honor his enduring spirit, and call on us to “get into good trouble” to advance justice and peace.

Judy Raymond will be the service leader. Everyone is welcome!

An in-depth look at the Sermon on the Mount

The Rev. Carlos Perez of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of DeLand invites all to hear “The Way of Jesus” sermons in February and March. This is an in-depth look into the book of Matthew, Chapters 5 and 6.

The series speaks to each person’s spiritual life and builds their relationship with Jesus. Matthew’s Scripture is referenced to a spiritual hunger and thirst for righteousness. This message from Jesus is frequently called “The Sermon on the Mount” and took place around A.D. 30 on the north end of the Sea of Galilee near Capernaum.

At the end of each month, there is a gathering to discuss the sermon series, with lunch provided, from noon to 1 p.m.

The Disciple Women sponsor bingo Fridays, Feb. 14, and 28, at 7 p.m. The proceeds, received after prize money is paid out, will go to The Bridge homeless shelter at 421 S. Palmetto Ave. in DeLand.

The Disciple Women will meet at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17, to evaluate the Trash and Treasure proceeds and how to distribute them in the community. Appreciation is extended to the community for support of the annual sale.

The Disciple Men will meet for breakfast at Big Rig 2 at 8 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15. Reservations can be made by calling 386-734-6078.

The facts about medical aid in dying

All are invited to Unitarian Universalists of DeLand’s 10:30 a.m. service Sunday, Feb. 9, to learn from Tony Ray about medical care and interventions your health care team can do to ensure your comfort during the active dying phase. Also learn about related legislation in Florida.

Ray founded Florida End-of-Life Options (FKA Florida Death with Dignity). Having experienced the death of several family members who would have chosen a medical aid-in-dying option (if one were available to relieve their suffering), he is motivated to get an aid-in-dying law passed in Florida.

Unitarian Universalists are an inclusive, freethinking, faith community, where all are welcome, as everyone learns and searches together for truth.

‘One Word That Will Change Your Life’

Pastor Mark Bitner will speak this Sunday, Feb. 9, at First Church DeLand, delivering the sermon titled “One Word That Will Change Your Life.”

Words have consequences. If we tell a lie to a friend, we are hurting them and ourselves. If we become angry and spew hurtful words, we are fools allowing the devil a foothold in our lives. We must control our anger rather than letting it control us.

“Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior.” Ephesians 4:31

God wants us to use good and helpful words.

First Church DeLand is giving out free mobile meals on the last Saturday of each month, starting at 4 p.m. These community meals are for anyone and are available outside behind the church kitchen in the parking lot between East Georgia and South Alabama avenues. Drive by or walk up!

Save the date for a communitywide Baby Shower 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, March 8, outside, weather permitting. Otherwise, the shower will be held inside. Representatives will be available from various organizations to assist moms-to-be.

Don’t forget that Financial Peace University begins Wednesday, March 26, at 6:15 p.m. and continues that time on Wednesdays. Learn how to manage your money in this nine-week class that teaches God’s ways of handling money.

Proclamation!

The Apostle Paul proclaims, “I want to remind you of the Gospel I preached to you … By this Gospel you are saved …”  (1 Corinthians 15:1-11)

On Sunday, Feb. 9,  at First Presbyterian Church of DeLand, Pastor Michael Bodger will repeat this proclamation. As clearly as Paul and the Apostles proclaimed it in the time of Jesus’ life, do we take the opportunities God places before us to proclaim the transformative story of Jesus?

On Friday, Feb. 7, have some free fun at bingo from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. All ages are welcome.

Youngsters from age 5 through fifth grade will meet this Sunday, Feb. 9, and every Sunday, for Kids Club from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Art Room with Pastor Casey Riker.

Also, that evening, and weekly, a student gathering for middle- and high-schoolers welcomes friends and members for dinner, fun, and Christian friendship from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with Pastor Riker.
