Miriam Texidor is February Artist of the Month

BY SANDRA BERTRAM

The West Volusia Artists would like to introduce Miriam Texidor as their Artist of the Month for February. Her acrylic work has been made into coloring books called Faces of a Warrior.

Her favorite piece, the first one on the left, is called Zipporah. This piece is based on biblical history. Zipporah is the wife of Moses and daughter of Jethro, a Midianite priest.

These faces are inspired by women of the Bible who made an impact on history. Texidor is currently working on another book that includes summaries of the women’s life changes made in biblical times. Her work will be on display at the Wayne G. Sanborn Activity Center during the month of February.

Texidor’s love of drawing came from an art teacher in the second grade. As an adult, she took college courses in drawing and graphic design. A professional artist was kind enough to give her tips and encouragement. She used her training to do award-winning graphic art.

In 1993, Texidor was recognized for her work on the logo for Friendship Elementary School in Deltona. In 1994, she worked on a bilingual newspaper and, in 2003, she designed a cartoon strip for the hospital where she worked.

Texidor’s faith in God is reflected in much of her work. She gets inspiration from Picasso and the Renaissance period, blending her spiritual love for Christ and the religious art of old into her unique style that creates these designs. She has experimented with different mediums, like acrylic, oil, watercolors, stained glass and clay.

Texidor would like to encourage other artists.

“Do what you love and find your unique style, then run with it,” she says.

Born and raised in New York City, in 1990 she and her husband moved to Deltona with their three children.

“Although I have always had a love for the arts, I felt the call to work in health care. Over the past 30 years, I have worked in health care, created art to sell and have spent the past six years in the real estate industry,” Texidor added.

In her spare time, she likes to read, garden, and be with family. She has been a member of the West Volusia Artists for about a year.

The West Volusia Artists meet 9 a.m.-noon on the first and third Friday September-June at the Sanborn Center, 815 S. Alabama Ave. in DeLand. Club activities include plein-air events, art field trips, art demos and monthly art challenges. All levels of artists are welcome.
