For many LGBTQ+ individuals and their families, finding acceptance and support can feel like looking for a lighthouse in a storm — desperately needed, but too often out of reach. In Volusia County, Jim and Carol Dries are holding their lamps high to ensure that support is available to those who need it.

PFLAG Volusia, the chapter they founded, is about to mark its first anniversary. As part of the national PFLAG network — the first and largest organization for LGBTQ+ people, their parents and families — PFLAG Volusia carries on a legacy that began in 1973, providing peer support, education and advocacy for LGBTQ+ individuals and their loved ones across the country. In its first year, the chapter has grown into a vital local resource, providing a safe space for LGBTQ+ individuals and their families to engage in safe conversation and support.

Carol, a seasoned musical theater professional, and Jim, a proud father, recognized a gap in local resources and decided to act.

“We had been snowbirds for years,” Jim recalled. “But when we decided to settle here, we realized this community needed a support system like this and that’s where we could be of service.”

PFLAG Volusia hosts confidential support meetings every fourth Thursday of the month, offering attendees a safe space to share their experiences, ask questions and connect with others.

“There are still so many people who don’t know we’re here,” Carol said. “But if just one more family finds the support they need because of us, then we’re doing our job.”

Meeting locations remain private for the safety of attendees, and those interested can request information via email at pflagdeland@gmail.com.

Beyond support meetings, PFLAG Volusia has built partnerships with organizations such as Volusia Pride, Rising Against All Odds, and Light a Candle, working to ensure that local LGBTQ+ individuals have access to additional resources. “It’s great to see different organizations come together with a shared goal,” Jim said. “It reminds us that no one has to go through this alone.”

Education and advocacy are also key components of PFLAG Volusia’s mission. Through guest speakers, workshops, and participation in events like Volusia Pride’s Love is Love celebration and Space Coast Pride, the organization works to address misconceptions and encourage inclusivity.”

“There is a lot of misinformation out there, and it can be harmful,” Carol said. “That’s why we’re committed to education and awareness.”

Board member Scott Mena, affectionately known in the community as “The Theater Guy,” has seen firsthand how PFLAG Volusia has made a difference.

“This group provides the support system that so many LGBTQ+ individuals and their families need,” Mena said. “Each event, each meeting, each conversation helps connect people with the resources available to them.”

To commemorate its first anniversary, PFLAG Volusia will host a celebration on Sunday, April 6, with Mena organizing the event. The gathering will reflect on the chapter’s progress and feature a keynote address from David Porter, president of PFLAG Orlando. Porter’s message will highlight the importance of continued outreach and collaboration between chapters.

“These meetings help us grow and strengthen our community,” Mena said. “It’s encouraging to see the impact PFLAG has made, and I’m proud to be part of it.”

Looking ahead, PFLAG Volusia aims to expand its board, increase membership, and further raise awareness to ensure that those in need can find support.

“Our goal is simple,” Carol said. “We want people to know they’re not alone. There is a community here, ready to support them.”
