Volusia County Schools
In an effort to reduce chronic absenteeism, Volusia County Schools has an award system for high school, middle school and elementary school.
Last week, the high schools’ accomplishments were announced.
This week, it’s the middle and elementary schools.
First place in the middle-school category went to Deltona Middle and Deltona’s Heritage Middle School with a 17-percent reduction, while Deltona’s Galaxy Middle was second with a reduction of 16 percent.
On the elementary level, on the west side of the county, Deltona Lakes Elementary tied for first with an 18-percent reduction, while Spirit Elementary in Deltona came in second with a 17-percent reduction.
All first-place schools gained $500, while all second-place schools earned $250 from AdventHealth.
VCS has announced the Superintendent’s Spring Fluency Challenge is running through May 2 for grades two-five. The grade level with the highest percentage of students completing their target i-Ready Fluency Flight days will win a Kona Ice Party.
Students access Fluency Flight through i-Ready in the VPortal and can complete a Fluency Flight session up to two times per day. Students should check with their teachers or guidance personnel on particulars of the program, which is sponsored by Kona Ice and Dave & Buster’s.
VCS’s School Way Cafes have an ultimate Wing Challenge taking place. School cafeteria staff have developed wing recipes and are competing for the title of Ultimate Wing Boss, with the winning recipe being featured on future menus.
In the elimination round, DeLand High and Galaxy Middle in Deltona made it through to the next level of competition, with the final taste-test taking place in April.
FHSAA academic honors
Each sport season, the Florida High School Athletic Association looks at each team’s academic averages. During the winter season, DeLand High, Pine Ridge High in Deltona, and Taylor Middle-High in Pierson earned honors with team averages above 3.0.
Starke Elementary School
Starke will have its final School Advisory Council meetings Thursday, April 24, and Thursday, May 22.
Timbercrest Elementary School
Students who had perfect attendance at Timbercrest for the third quarter, including excused absences, got to help tape Principal Lonnie Tidmarsh to the wall.
Timbercrest recently celebrated Latino Night, with vibrant sights, sounds and flavors, and a special initiative with Latinos in Action.
Woodward Avenue Elementary School
Earlier this year, the school was chosen as the Danny Gainin School of Excellence. A presentation will take place Wednesday, April 16.
DeLand Middle School
Vanessa Hale has been chosen as the school’s Social Studies Teacher of the Year, while Jon Hansen was named as the Rookie Social Studies Teacher of the Year.
The students in the Exploring Manufacturing class taught by Emmet Foxworth are designing and wiring their own three-bedroom, three-bath dream home. This hands-on project teaches the basics of electricity, home wiring and career skills in a high-demand field.
Southwestern Middle School
Southwestern also received the Danny Gainin School of Excellence Award.
The school thanked DeLand Breakfast Rotary for donating two pallets of mulch to the school, and the City of DeLand for delivering it for the annual Spruce Up Southwestern project.
Middle-school basketball soon kicks off. Southwestern’s first games will be Tuesday, April 1, and Thursday, April 3, with the girls starting at 5:30 p.m. The boys follow immediately.
On April 1, the teams go to Heritage Middle in Deltona, and on April 3, to River Springs Middle in Orange City. Their first home game is Thursday, April 10, against Galaxy Middle.
DeLand High School
DeLand High is currently accepting nominations for its School Advisory Council. Visit its website to get a candidacy form, which is to be emailed to kmcclart@volusia.k12.fl.us by 5 p.m. Friday, April 11.
Grad Bash 25 for DeLand High is Saturday, April 5. Students are to arrive sharply at 1 p.m. (no latecomers) at the English building. Students should park in the teacher parking lot off of Plymouth Avenue. Bring a driver’s license/permit or student ID. All sales are final, with no refunds.
Ethan Tussing, a DeLand High grad and the throws coach at Virginia Commonwealth University, directed junior athlete Gudrun Hallgrimsdottir of Iceland to second place in the NCAA Indoor National Track and Field Championships in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Hallgrimsdottir threw the weight throw for 71 feet, 1 inch, a personal best and school record.
Deltona High School
Prom will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 5, in Daytona Beach. The deadline for purchasing tickets is Wednesday, April 2, at the cost of $90.
Pine Ridge High School
Prom will be Friday, April 25. Ticket sales end Wednesday, April 23.
