The West Volusia Artists announce Earlene Redenz as the March Artist of the Month. She is holding her mosaic piece Fall Colors. Other pieces came about because she enjoyed the process so much.
A mosaic is a decorative composite work of art that features small, individual stone, glass or ceramic pieces together in a pattern called tesserae.
Redenz is a self-taught artist who learned by going to local classes. She has progressed to experimenting with different media like acrylic, colored pencils and watercolors.
Born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, she married and raised her family in Orlando.
Her first adult art experience was an oil-painting class. After her children were grown, she went back to college and earned a degree in graphic design, working for a trade magazine for 10 years. After retirement, she expanded her art interest to mosaics.
Now, Redenz enjoys selling her pieces at local art shows.
“Keep trying different things until you find ones that excite you,” she said.
Redenz joined the West Volusia Artists when a friend invited her three years ago.
The West Volusia Artists meet 9 a.m.-noon on the first and third Fridays, September-May, at the Wayne G. Sanborn Activity Center, 815 S. Alabama Ave. in DeLand. Club activities include plein-air events, art field trips, art demos and monthly art challenges. Artists of all levels are welcome.
