Attention! Those who are interested in military history or who are fascinated with World War II vehicles, weapons and artifacts have an exciting weekend coming up.
The Volusia County Fairgrounds, 3150 E. New York Ave. in DeLand, will resemble a military field camp from the Second World War, as WW2 Armor welcomes one and all to its second annual Volusia Valor Days March 29 and 30. The event is free and open to the public.
“WW2 Armor is a Volusia County, Florida-based not-for-profit dedicated to the preservation and demonstration of fully-operational vintage World War II tanks and artillery,” wrote WW2 Armor Chief of Staff Michael Houk, in an advance announcement of the event. “A self-deployed museum, we preserve the memories and demonstrate the experiences of the crews who fought in them.”
Volusia Valor Days comes just a little more than a month before the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, or V-E Day, May 8. On that date in 1945, Germany officially surrendered to the U.S., Great Britain, France and the Soviet Union.
The working war machines will feature blank firing demonstrations and a mock battle. Historians will be on hand for Volusia Valor Days, along with exhibits from local museums, other historical organizations and veterans organizations.
Also on hand for the event will be local first-responder units, including the Volusia Sheriff’s Office, Volusia County Fire Rescue and Emergency Medical Services. Food vendors and militaria dealers will be present.
