The DeLand chapter currently has 62 members.

The slogan was, “Come for a drink, and stay for a cause.”

And, they did. Members of the community gathered at Nest on Artisan Alley on March 25 for a fundraiser for the local chapter of the PEO Sisterhood, and the nonprofit organization ended the night $4,394 richer.

PEO stands for “philanthropic educational organization.” The money raised will go to women in the form of scholarships to further their education.

PEO has been providing this service in the West Volusia community since 1971, raising more than $81,000 over the past 10 years for scholarships..

“We were all truly amazed, and extremely grateful, to our sisters and their families, and the community, for the support they gave us,” Chapter President Deb Tolan said.

PEO stands for “philanthropic educational organization,” and the March 25 event was a fundraiser for the nonprofit that produced more than $4,300 in donations from the community.

Nest is owned by DeLandites Sandy and Ian Bobo. Several times a year, the shop-and-bar at 104 Artisan Alley in Downtown DeLand hosts what’s called Tip-Z.

Guest bartenders pour the wine, beer, and award-winning sangria, and all the tips collected during the event go to support a nonprofit organization.

Tip-Z was conceived by friends of the Nest Boz Tchividian of Boz Law P.A., community volunteer Bill McIntyre, Santi Gabino of the Athens Theatre, and this writer, of The West Volusia Beacon and Conrad Realty Co. Conrad Realty Co. owns the property where Nest is located.

These four tended bar for the PEO event, capably assisted by George Jenkins, whose wife is PEO member Ann Jenkins. The five bartenders raised $2,197 in tips, and an anonymous donor offered to match the tips, doubling the money for the PEO scholarship fund.

“It’s a local donor,” was all Tolan would say about the anonymous benefactor.

The next Tip-Z event is planned 5-8 p.m. Thursday, May 1, to benefit the African American Museum of the Arts in DeLand. All are welcome to attend, and to “Come for a drink, and stay for a cause.”
