James A. Stewart Lecture Series: Fighting for Food Justice with History: Fast Food, Black Struggle, and Strong Communities

February 17, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

In her keynote address, Dr. Chatelain will discuss her Pulitzer Prize-winning book Franchise: The Golden Arches in Black America to make a case for history as a key tool in organizing for food justice.  By examining the ways that fast food entered African American communities in the late 1960s, Dr. Chatelain’s research provides a call to action for people today in its attention to the various ways that food can bring people together, as well as tear them apart. In recognition of the long struggle for access to healthy foods, respectful businesses, and power over the future, Dr. Chatelain provides new insights into civil rights that informs how we think and act today.
