Volusia County sheriff’s deputies are investigating a fatal Monday-afternoon shooting in DeBary following a fight between a father and son.

Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Laura Williams said deputies were called to a home on Hollow Pine Drive by the victim’s father, Joseph Johnson, 62, who reported he had shot his son, 32-year-old Cory Johnson, after the two were in a physical fight.

Cory Johnson was declared deceased at the scene, according to Williams.

“The argument erupted earlier Monday when Cory returned home after spending the night in jail,” she said.

The younger Johnson was arrested Sunday in Daytona Beach Shores, and charged with possession or use of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance.

“Family members told deputies Cory was released from jail Monday, and upon returning home, was enraged that his parents did not help him get out of jail,” Williams said. “[Cory] was attempting to take a vehicle from the residence that was jointly owned by him and his mother.”

His parents tried to defuse the situation but eventually called sheriff’s deputies, who responded to the home regarding the civil dispute about the vehicle.

About an hour after deputies left the scene the first time, Joseph Johnson called the Sheriff’s Office at 4:37 p.m. to report that a physical fight had occurred, and that he had shot his son.

No arrests have been made in the case, pending further investigation, Williams said.
