This winter’s biggest model-airplane event will bring the buzz of small piston engines and the swoosh of tiny jet engines back to DeLand early next month.

The Golden Hawks Radio Control Club open-house Winter RC Air Fest flying display takes off at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at the club airfield on the east side of DeLand Municipal Airport, 1000 RC Club Drive.

Club members will also be celebrating their success in raising money for gifts of bikes and other toys last month to the Toys for Tots program. Winter RC Air Fest event Chairman Michael Setteducati presented the gifts at the DeLand Fire Department’s Station 81 in December.

The Feb. 8 event will feature local, regional and national RC model aircraft pilots and their wide variety of hand-crafted models, from World War l biplanes to sleek modern jet fighters, and every type of airplane in between.

A high point for many visitors is the large model-airplane swap meet, where someone new to the hobby can find model aircraft at reasonable prices. There will be a noontime flying demonstration program, as well. Food and other refreshments will be available.

The event starts at 9 a.m. and will last through midafternoon, weather permitting. Entry to the Winter RC Air Fest costs $5 per carload.

The Golden Hawks flight line is reached from Marsh Road, north off of International Speedway Boulevard (U.S. Highway 92), just east of the DeLand Municipal Airport. From Marsh Road, take the turn toward the Sperling Sports Complex, and follow the signs to the Golden Hawks’ aerodrome.
