Downtown DeLand drone shot
PHOTO BY FLYING CAT DRONEWORKS/ANTHONY DeFEO VIEW FROM ABOVE — This photo, taken with a drone, shows Indiana Avenue in Downtown DeLand, looking west. Many landmarks can be seen, including the Historic Volusia County Courthouse, Volusia County’s Thomas C. Kelly Administration Center, blocks of commercial buildings, and, of course, the historic Athens Theatre at the far end of Indiana Avenue.

The DeLand City Commission will hold its final budget and tax hearing for the upcoming fiscal year next week and discuss a number of topics, including increased water rates.

The final budget hearing will be the last opportunity for the City Commission to alter their planned budget for the 2021-22 fiscal year. The hearing will also be the last opportunity for members of the public to share their feelings about the new budget.

At the City Commission’s first budget hearing Sept. 8, commissioners gave the first of two approvals to a millage rate of 6.7841. While higher than the rolled-back rate of 6.52 mills, it’s lower than the initially advertised rate of 6.92 mills.

The City Commission will also discuss other topics, including the second hearing for increased water rates.

Before the City Commission meets at 7 p.m., the Downtown DeLand Community Redevelopment Agency will meet to discuss its budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

The CRA plans for a budget of $599,000, which will go toward projects, including upgrading wayfinding signage in the Downtown area and fixing up the roof of the Fish Building, 100 N. Woodland Blvd.

Both the Downtown DeLand CRA and the City Commission will meet Monday, Sept. 20, in the City Commission Chambers, DeLand City Hall, 120 S. Florida Ave. The CRA meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m., and the City Commission meeting will begin at 7 p.m.
