Family Health Source will give out free coronavirus test kits beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, at Bill Keller Park, 338 Colomba Road in DeBary.
A steady stream of cars showed up Jan. 4 at Deltona Plaza, 1200 Deltona Blvd., as Family Health Source handed out the free test kits.
As the omicron variant spreads and new cases surge, the nonprofit agency set up three drive-thru distribution points in Deltona, DeLand and Pierson, to give away 7,200 self-test kits on a first-come/first-served basis. Family Health Source will have 600 test kits to give away in DeBary on Thursday, Deltona City Commissioner Victor Ramos said.
The Deltona site had 3,600 kits in stock for the giveaway, and there was a big demand.
“We were supposed to start at 9 o’clock, but we started at 8:30 because there were cars already backing up to Normandy [Boulevard],” Commissioner Ramos said, adding cars actually began lining up as early as 7 a.m.
Ramos, who is vice chair of the board of directors of Family Health Source, said there were other people showing up asking for the test kits, as well.
“People coming out of Crunch Fitness, and we’ve had a few veterans coming over from their appointments [at the nearby U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs clinic],” Ramos added.
Ramos said Family Health Source hopes to schedule more such distributions, as the supplies become available.
FREE FOR THE TAKING — Deltona Vice Mayor Maritza Avila-Vazquez, left, gives a COVID test kit and literature about the coronavirus to a driver at Family Health Source’s distribution of self-testing kits in Deltona Jan. 4. Avila-Vazquez was a volunteer at the drive-thru giveaway.
