WINNER OF A NEW ROOF — Brenda Beery and Sean Beery kneel on either side of a seated Darwin D. Tennant, a retired Army major living in Glenwood, who won a free roof from Beery Roofing & Redesign LLC.

During the Christmas season, Beery Roofing & Redesign LLC in DeLand decided to help a veteran or first responder in need of a new roof.

While the 25-year-old company said it received many worthy nominees, the winner was retired Army Maj. Darwin D. Tennant, who lives in Glenwood. It was only after Tennant was chosen that Beery Roofing learned details of his past.

According to a Beery Roofing news release, Tennant was born in North Dakota in 1931. When his father died, he decided to join the Army to help provide for his family and to defend our country.

He entered as an infantry soldier and worked his way through the ranks to become a sergeant first-class. He later served in the Korean War, did two tours in Vietnam, and received the Bronze Star with V.

Tennant retired in 1968 as a major from Fort Gordon, Georgia, after more than 20 years of service. He moved to Glenwood, purchased 10 acres of land, sold manufactured homes in DeLand, and became an ordained minister.

Maj. Tennant married his junior-high sweetheart in 1949 and has several children. His son, Mike, nominated him for this contest.
