BEACON PHOTO/JAN GIROUX GIVING THEM AWAY — DeBary Mayor Karen Chasez gives away a tree to a DeBary resident during the city's Arbor Day event April 30.

This past Saturday, April 30, 2022, the City of DeBary hosted their annual Arbor Day Tree Giveaway sponsored by Duke Energy.

The City provided a tree to 200 households in a first-come, first-served drive-through event. Residents also received other giveaways such as planter pods, shovels, and rain gauges. Along with commemorating Arbor Day, the City of DeBary was also celebrating their official designation as a 2021 Tree City USA, awarded two days prior on April 28, 2022.

“With our recent designation as a Tree City USA, we are happy to see such excitement and participation from our residents to expand our City’s canopy,” stated DeBary Mayor Karen Chasez. “We prioritize trees and greenspaces within our City and are encouraged to see our residents making a positive environmental impact as well.”

Duke Energy donated 200 trees for DeBary residents including Crepe Myrtles and Southern Indicia Azaleas. The trees were distributed by DeBary mayor Karen Chasez, councilmembers Patricia Stevenson and Jim Pappalardo, Duke Energy volunteers, City staff and Citizen Academy graduates.

Cities recognized as Tree City USAs by the Arbor Day Foundation have met core standards that show commitment to creating and maintaining a clean, healthy, and beautiful landscape. Arbor Day is celebrated in all 50 states and is typically observed on the last Friday of April when individuals and groups are encouraged to plant trees. The City of DeBary hosts their Arbor Day Tree Giveaway in partnership with Duke Energy annually at 16 Colomba Road in DeBary, Florida.
